Rider rolls to 43-12 win over Cleveland State

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- The Rider University Wrestling team (7-1, 3-1 EWL) made quick work of the Vikings of Cleveland State University, winning 43-12 on the backs of five Bronc pins and two technical falls.

“You need to bounce back, and that's what the team called each other to do,” said Rider Head Coach Gary Taylor. “We wrestled well today.”

The Broncs won eight of 10 matches, receiving victories from J.R. Wert (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg), Anthony Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park Regional), B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), Dean Sherry (Brick, NJ/Brick Township), Michale Fagg-Daves (Somerset, NJ/Franklin), Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy), and Mauro Correnti (Delran, NJ/Holy Cross). Cefolo, Walsh, Sherry, Wolfe, and Correnti won by fall, while Wert and Clagon brought home technical falls.

Senior leader Ryan Wolfe talked about preparing for the match; “We had a long talk with the guys to get them motivated again for today's match. We told them to just go out and have fun, and that's what we did and want to do going forward.”

Wrestling kicked off quickly with junior 125 Wert winning by technical fall, 15-0, over John Martin of CSU in 4:39 to get the Broncs out to a 5-0 lead. The winning would continue with Cefolo scoring the fall at 133, defeating Spencer Dusi in 2:24 to push the Broncs to 11-0.

The Broncs would then suffer their only two losses of the day, with juniors Zach Valcarce (Villas, NJ/Lower Cape May) and Jesse Rodgers (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) losing at 141 and 149, respectively, by fall to give the Vikings their only lead of the day, 12-11.

The winning would continue once again with junior 157 Clagon defeating Grant Turnmire by 18-0 technical fall in 4:03.

Walsh would add to the bonus at 165, winning by fall over John Vaughn in 4:53 and continuing his stretch as one of the nation's top pinners in Division I wrestling and moving into a second-place tie with Zain Retherford of Penn State with 10 falls. “My brother won the award for most pins in the country, so I'm trying to keep up with him” said Walsh, whose brother, Taylor, was an All-American wrestler at Indiana.

Sophomore 174 Sherry would score a fall of his own, defeating Devon Pingel in 2:27 to push the Broncs to a 28-12 lead, where Fagg-Daves would push it out of reach at 184 in the only match to go the distance in the dual, defeating Nick Corba 3-2.

Wolfe would go out and get a pin of his own, defeating Collin Kelly in 2:30 to move on to the last and quickest match of the afternoon, where redshirt junior heavyweight Correnti would stick Mike Furbee in 2:22 to close out the match with a 43-12 score.

The Broncs next wrestle on Friday, January 27th at Nelson Field House at Bloomsburg. Rider's next home home match is on February 11th against Drexel at 8 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium.
