Quick start leads Wyoming past Boise State

BOISE, Idaho -- The Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers used a major decision and pin in the first two matches on their way to a 33-6 win over Boise State on Sunday afternoon in Bronco Gymnasium in Boise, Idaho. True freshman Drake Foster, a native of Post Falls, Idaho, earned his first dual win as a Cowboy in the opening match of the dual.

The Cowboys won eight-of-the-10 matches on the afternoon. UW also recorded bonus points in five of the wins.

“We were an entirely different team out there today and it shows how having a great mindset makes a difference,” UW head coach Mark Branch. “We wrestled with a lot more aggression and confidence, I really like what I saw. Hopefully this is something we build on and we hold on to it for the rest of the season.”

Foster got the Pokes off to a quick start with his 16-8 major decision victory over Josh Newberg at 133 pounds. Foster opened the match with a takedown and a nearfall to lead 7-4 after the first period. He continued to attack in the match and added a takedown late to earn the major decision.

“Drake (Foster) wrestled tough and threw the kid to his back right away and settled in,” Branch said. “He panicked a little bit, but he kept wrestling and stretched it out and got the major decision. We talk about wrestling for our team and he went out and did that.”

Sophomore Bryce Meredith followed Foster's lead earning a pin 1:27 into his match against Jake Valverde. After a takedown to start the match Meredith earned a two-point nearfall before earning the pin. It was his fifth dual win with bonus points this season.

After Geordan Martinez got Boise State on the board with an 11-6 decision over UW redshirt freshman Branson Ashworth, Wyoming's Archie Colgan moved to 6-1 in duals with a 3-2 decision over Chris Castillo. Colgan earned two points with a takedown in the first period and added an escape before walking out with the win.

Sophomore Chaz Polson added a win at 165 pounds with a 9-5 decision over Taylor West to extend the Pokes' dual lead to 16-3. Polson used a reversal and a three-point nearfall in the second period to earn his first dual win of the season.

After senior Jace Jensen fell by decision to Austin Dewey by a tally of 4-1, Wyoming's Benjamin Stroh won by major decision at 184 pounds over Keavon Buckley by a mark of 12-3. Stroh recorded three takedowns in the third and final period and accumulated over three minutes of riding time for the win.

Junior Brandon Tribble took an 8-4 decision at 197 pounds over Harley Dilulo. Tribble recorded three takedowns in the dual and added a point on an escape and riding time. Senior Tanner Harms was dominate in his match winning by major decision 12-0 over Gaylen Edmo. Harms recorded three takedowns and a four-point nearfall to go along over six minutes of riding time.

The Cowboys return to action next Saturday with a 6 p.m. dual against Cal Poly in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
