Kalivas' victory continues his impressive showing in the month of January. Nebraska-Kearney's Paul Sutton, who faced Kalivas on Jan. 7, is the only dual competitor to beat the Bakerfield, Calif., native this month.
Saturday's match began with two straight pins by the Jacks at 197-pounds and heavyweight before freshman Bricen Yakabe won by forfeit at 125-pounds. Freshman 157-pounder Shane Evenhus then followed three straight Viking defeats to take his first victory of the season, 3-1 against Brad Gregory.
For the second straight season, the Vikings 184-pound wrestler, sophomore Sean Murphy, recorded his first dual victory of the season by pinning South Dakota's Levi Krehmeyer. Murphy pinned his foe in 6:23.
Portland State returns home next weekend for it's final home stand of the 2005-06 season. The Vikings will face Northern Colorado on Friday and Fresno State on Saturday. Both events will take place at 7 p.m. PSU will also take on Pacific Saturday at noon in Forest Grove, Ore.
