    Pitt defeats Gardner-Webb, Davidson

    DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The 16th-ranked University of Pittsburgh wrestling team recorded two wins Saturday, defeating Gardner-Webb, 38-4, and Davidson, 31-6.

    The Panthers first took on the Bulldogs in Boiling Springs, N.C., before traveling to Davidson to take on the Wildcats.

    "It was good to get those two duals in today," said head coach Keith Gavin. "We wanted to make the most out of this road trip. We have a tough team in NC State tomorrow and our guys are excited to compete."

    With the wins, Pitt improves to 10-3 on the year while Gardner-Webb drops to 2-10 and Davidson moves to 2-9.

    The Panthers conclude their weekend in North Carolina at No. 8 NC State Sunday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m.

    PITT 38, GARDNER-WEBB 4

    The first dual of the day featured two wins by fall by redshirt freshman Nino Bonaccorsi at 184 pounds and senior Robert Lee at 149 pounds, both of which occurred in the opening frame. Pitt won nine of the 10 bouts en route to the 38-4 victory.

    Things got started at 184 pounds with Bonaccorsi recording the first period fall, giving the Panthers a hefty 6-0 lead.

    Redshirt junior Kellan Stout then picked up his 11th win of the year at 197 as he posted a 5-2 decision over Anthony Perrine, boosting the team score to 9-0.

    Redshirt senior Zach Bruce also recorded a notable win in his appearance in the starting lineup at heavyweight, winning by technical fall in 2:06, shutting out Jeffrey Linker, 16-0.

    The Panthers jumped to a 20-0 lead after Gardner-Webb forfeited 125 pounds.

    Freshman Garrett Reinsfelder then made his first varsity appearance at 133 pounds. Reinsfelder had a solid showing, winning in a 5-1 decision over Brandon Bright.

    Pitt's winning ways continued as senior LJ Bentley outlasted Blake Mulkey in TB-1, 5-4. Bentley and Mulkey were tied 4-4 at the end of regulation. Both were unable to score in sudden victory, which followed a 30-second ride out period with Bentley on top. Mulkey then let Bentley escape off bottom and was unable to score.

    Lee then tacked on six more team points after his first period fall over Conrad Schiess at 149 pounds, bringing the team score to 32-0.

    Redshirt junior Riley Barth got the starting nod at 157 pounds this afternoon and win in a solid 9-5 decision over Evan Schenk.

    Gardner-Webb recorded its lone win of the dual at 165 pounds as returning NCAA qualifier and 20th-ranked Tyler Marinelli defeated sophomore Tommy O'Brien in a 10-1 major decision.

    Redshirt sophomore Gregg Harvey capped off the day with a 5-3 decision over Kyle Hornet at 174 pounds giving the Panthers a 38-4 victory.

    16 PITT 31, DAVIDSON 6

    The Panthers had a dominant showing in the second dual of the day, defeating Davidson, 31-6. Pitt won eight of the 10 weight classes with four contributing bonus points.

    Fenton received another win by forfeit this evening, giving the Panthers a comfortable 6-0 lead to open the dual.

    Davidson responded at 133 by winning in an 8-3 decision over Reinsfelder.

    Sophomore Jake Cherry made an appearance in the starting lineup tonight and had a solid showing. Cherry jumped to a 6-0 lead early in the first after scoring a takedown and four nearfall. However, a reversal by Caleb Ziebell and escape by Cherry would bring the score to 7-2 at the end of the first. Cherry then start the second on top and would remain there the entire frame. He started the third on bottom and scored a reversal and added a final point with riding time en route to the major decision, 10-1.

    Moving to 149 pounds, Lee contributed bonus points for the second time today as he won in a 10-1 major decision. Lee scored four takedowns, an escape and added a final point with riding time for his 10th win of the season.

    The Wildcats captured their second win of the dual at 165 pounds as Barth dropped a 3-2 decision to Tony Palumbo, bringing the team score to 14-6 in favor of Pitt.

    O'Brien bounced back after suffering a loss earlier in the day by defeating Hunter Costa, 9-6, at 165 pounds. The sophomore led 7-5 at the end of the first and started the second on bottom, but was unable to escape. Costa started the third on bottom and escaped to cut O'Brien's lead to 7-6. O'Brien then scored a takedown to secure the win, 9-6.

    The Panthers jumped to a 22-6 lead in the team race thanks to a 21-6 technical fall by Harvey at 174 pounds. Harvey scored eight takedowns, picked up four nearfall points and an escape en route to the victory.

    Bonaccorsi then cruised to a 7-0 shutout at 184 pounds over Conor Fenn. The redshirt freshman was in control the majority of the match, accumulating 5:28 riding time.

    Redshirt freshman Cole Nye made a first-time appearance in the lineup tonight at 197 and recorded an 8-2 decision over Finaly Holston. After a low scoring first and second period, Nye recorded an escape, two takedown and added a riding time point en route to the win and bringing the team score to 28-6.

    Bruce recorded his second shutout of the day at heavyweight, this time in a 5-0 decision over Mitch Trigg. The win capped off the day as the Panthers dominated the Wildcats, 31-6.
