Pitt completes weekend sweep, defeats Edinboro

PITTSBURGH -- The 10th-ranked University of Pittsburgh wrestling team used eight individual wins to take down the Edinboro Fighting Scots, 28-6, Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House.

The win completes Pitt's sweep of the weekend as the Panthers shutout Duke Saturday, Jan. 25 in Durham.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 7-2 (1-0 ACC), while the Fighting Scots fall to 10-6 (3-2 MAC).

"We wrestled pretty well today," said head coach Keith Gavin. "I think a big focus for us has always been to stay in the hunt to score points and most of our guys did that today and that was good to see but we have to be consistent with that approach. But, like I said most of them did that today and did what they were supposed to do."

Pitt started the match with a win at 125 pounds when redshirt freshman Louis Newell defeat Lucas Rodriguez 16-0 in a technical fall in 5:22. Newell used three takedowns and three nearfalls en route to the victory.

Sixth-ranked redshirt sophomore Micky Phillippi used 10 takedowns to earn a 12-3 major decision over Tyler Varndell at 133 pounds. Phillippi led 9-0 in the third period after recording three consecutive takedowns. The win was Phillippi's ninth-straight dual win dating back to last season.

Moving to 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Cole Matthews used four points in the third period and riding time to record Pitt's second straight major decision outlasting Jackie Gold, 11-2. The win was Matthews' 12th of the year.

The Panthers lost their first bout of the day at 149 pounds when Edinboro's Tyler Vath defeated redshirt freshman Luke Kemerer, 10-5.

Redshirt senior and 28th ranked Taleb Rahmani used a takedown with 50 seconds left in the third period to break a tie and take a 6-4 lead over Peter Pappas. Rahmani then used riding time to finish with a 7-5 decision over Pappas at 157 pounds. The win gave the Panthers a 16-3 lead in the dual.

Pitt recorded its fifth win of the day at 165 pounds when 10th-ranked redshirt junior Jake Wentzel used two takedowns, one escape and riding time to record a 6-1 decision over Derek Ciavarro. Wentzel scored four points in the second period en route to winning his 14th match of the season.

The Fighting Scots recorded their second win of the day at 174 pounds after No. 19 Jacob Oliver used a first period takedown to record a 4-1 decision over No. 19 redshirt junior Gregg Harvey.

Ninth-ranked redshirt sophomore Nino Bonaccorsi put the Panthers back in the win column at 184 pounds after recording an 8-3 decision over Cody Mulligan. Bonaccorsi used a takedown to take an early lead, which he would never relinquish.

Redshirt senior Kellan Stout used an escape in the third period to score the only point of the bout at 184 pounds. Stout also used riding time to come away with the 2-0 decision over Dylan Reynolds for his sixth win of the season and give the Panthers a 25-6 lead entering the final bout.

Ninth ranked senior Demetrius Thomas ended things for the Panthers when he earned a 3-0 decision over No. 25 Jon Spaulding at 285 pounds. Thomas earned the first point of the match when he escaped in the second period. He then scored a takedown in the third period to end the bout and Pitt the 28-6 win.

Pitt will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. when the Panthers take on No. 5 NC State at 7 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Field house.
