Penn State pounds Ohio State, 39-7, in Big Ten action

State College, Pa. –– The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, ranked No. 8 in the country, pounded Ohio State 39-7 in Big Ten wrestling action. Head coach Troy Sunderland's Lions won eight of ten bouts and grabbed their seventh road win of the year while posting their most lopsided win over Ohio State since Penn State joined the Big Ten for the 1992-93 season.

The dual began at 184, where Nittany Lion senior Eric Bradley (Plaistow, N.H.), ranked No. 7, took on No. 20 Alex Picazo. Bradley, who dropped from No. 4 to No. 7 despite posting a major last weekend, got the first points with a quick takedown and led 2-1 after a Picazo escape. The twosome exchanged a few shots over the remainder of the period with no more scoring. Bradley chose down to begin the second and quickly escaped for a 3-1 lead, but that would be the only scoring of the period. Picazo chose down to begin the final period and quickly escaped to cut the Bradley lead to 3-2. Picazo nearly got in on a single leg and was the aggressor early on in the third. Bradley countered another Picazo shot but could not manage the takedown with :30 remaining. Bradley fought off a last Picazo offensive thrust with under ten seconds left and held on for a hard fought 3-2 win. The win put Penn State up 3-0 while Bradley improved to 8-1 with the victory. Picazo fell to 20-15.

Sophomore Phil Davis (Harrisburg, Pa.), Penn State's highest ranked wrestler with a No. 6 ranking at 197, met Ohio State's Corey Morrison. Davis quickly moved up 2-0 with an early takedown of Morrison. Within seconds, Davis got two near fall points out of a cradle and maintained his top position as well. Morrison got an escape but was quickly thrown to his back by Davis in a solid five point move, putting the Nittany Lion up 9-1. Three more near fall points as the period ended gave Davis a 12-1 lead heading into the second. Davis chose down to begin the second and quickly escaped to a 13-1 lead. Davis quickly took Morrison down and, with the technical fall in his sights and up 15-1, began working for a pinning combination. Davis completed a cradle after a reset and finally got the pin at the 4:43 mark. The six points put Penn State up 9-0 and improved Davis to 16-3. The pin was the fifth of the year for Davis and the 14th of his career. Morrison fell to 7-18.

Senior heavyweight Joel Edwards (Upper Darby, Pa.), ranked No. 19, met Ohio State's Kirk Nail. Edwards quickly went up 2-0 less than :30 into the bout. Nail escaped to a 2-1 deficit and after a hard fought scramble in the middle of the mat, took Edwards down. Edwards quickly escaped and the score was tied at 3-3. The Nittany Lion senior got an important take down with just :03 left to head to the second period up 5-3. Edwards chose down to begin the second and escaped to a 6-3 lead with 1:30 left in the second stanza. After a quick body lock, Edwards went up 8-3 with another take down, fighting off a Nail counter in the process. Nail escaped with :45 left but still trailed 8-4, which is how the period ended. Nail chose down to begin the final period and quickly escaped, took Edwards down but let Edwards quickly escape and with just over 1:30 left, Edwards clung to a 9-7 lead. The duo battled in the center of the mat, with neither man giving an inch as the third period ticked down. With under :20 left, Edwards got hit with a second stall, cutting his lead to 9-8. Edwards, however, had enough to hold on for the 9-8, putting Penn State up 12-0. Edwards improved to 13-4 with the win while Nail fell to 14-8.

At 125, Nittany Lion true freshman Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.) got his shot against Buckeye Anner Arroyo. Sophomore Tim Haas (Camp Hill, Pa.) was out of the line-up with a knee injury. Pataky got a quick take down and three near fall points before Arroyo escaped to a 5-1 deficit. The Nittany Lion freshman got another quick take down and more back points to go up 10-1 with less than 2:00 gone. Pataky would add two more take downs to ride a 14-2 lead into the second period. Arroyo chose down to begin the second and was cut loose right away. Arroyo was more aggressive as the second began, but Pataky scored again on a nice counter take down and, with two near fall points, posted a 20-4 technical fall at the 4:33 mark. The win put Penn State up 17-0 and improved Pataky's mark to 14-6 on the year. Arroyo fell to 1-5.

Nittany Lion freshman Jake Strayer (South Fork, Pa.), ranked No. 9, got a win by forfeit at 133 to put Penn State up 23-0. Strayer improved to 19-2 with the victory, including a 6-1 mark in Big Ten action.

Penn State senior DeWitt Driscoll (Connellsville, Pa.), ranked No. 11 nationally, took on Buckeye sophomore T.J. Enright at 141. Driscoll got the bout's first take down quickly to go up 2-0 and, after a good solid ride, picked up three near fall points. After Enright rolled through to belly out in the center of the mat, Driscoll locked in on a cradle and nailed the fall at the 2:50 mark. The quick pin put Penn State up 29-0 and moved Driscoll to 13-7 on the year. Enright fell to 15-12.

With senior starter James Woodall (Dupont, Pa.) out with a skin infection, true freshman Jason Lapham (West Chazy, N.Y.) got the call at 149. One of four freshmen in Penn State's line-up vs. Ohio State, Lapham took on No. 10 J Jaggers. Jaggers, OSU's highest ranked wrestler, got the first take down and nearly pinned Lapham. But the move was a five-pointer and Jaggers had a 5-0 lead. Jaggers, looking to avoid the shut-out for OSU, rode Lapham out to lead 5-0 after one. Jaggers chose down to begin the second. Lapham was very strong on top and controlled Jaggers, nearly turning him for back points early on in the ride. Jaggers reversed Lapham, however, to go up 7-0 with :45 left in the second period, which is how the middle stanza ended. Jaggers continued to dominate the bout and moved on to an impressive 11-0 major decision. The win got the Buckeyes on the board, cutting the Lion lead to 29-4. Lapham fell to 8-10 on the year while Jaggers improved to 25-6.

At 157, Penn State junior Nathan Galloway (State College, Pa.), ranked No. 12 nationally, took on Ohio State senior Steve Sommer. Galloway got in on a single but Sommer countered and got the take down call for a 2-0 lead with less than 1:00 left in the first period. Sommer rode Galloway out and led 2-0 with :48 of riding time heading into the second. Galloway chose down to begin the second but could not escape, with Sommer building up a 2:48 riding time edge in the process. Sommer chose down to begin the third and escaped to a 3-0 lead plus the solid riding time edge. The Buckeye quickly added yet another take down to go up 5-0 with under a minute left. Galloway escaped to a 5-1 deficit but needed a pinning combination of sorts to have any chance at coming back. But Sommer, on Senior Night, would hold Galloway at bay to claim a solid 6-1 upset win over Galloway. Penn State still led 29-7 with Galloway falling to 10-12 with the loss. Sommer improved to 20-14.

True freshman David Erwin (Urbana, Ohio) carried a No. 12 ranking into his bout with senior Nathaniel Augustson. After a quick shot to start the bout and Augustson counter try, Erwin threw Augustson to his back and opened up the scoring with a five point flurry thanks to a take down and three back points. After Augustson escaped to a 5-1 deficit, Erwin got another take down and two more near fall points to go up 9-1 on the Buckeye senior through one period. Augustson chose down to begin the second but was dominated by Erwin, who did not let Augustson up and built up a plus-3:00 riding time edge. Erwin, with the riding time point assured and leading 9-1 on the scoreboard, chose neutral to begin the third and quickly took Augustson down. Erwin, sensing a technical fall, began cutting Augustson loose in order to score more points via a flurry of take downs. When all was said and done, the true freshman posted an impressive 18-5 major decision over the senior Augustson. The victory put Penn State up 33-7 while Erwin improved to 22-6. Augustson fell to 17-15.

Junior James Yonushonis (Philipsburg, Pa.), ranked in the top ten nationally at No. 9, met Buckeye Zach Craiglow, normally a 165-pound reserve for Ohio State. Craiglow stunned Yonushonis with a quick take down and three back points to go up 5-0 less than :30 into the bout. Yonushonis escaped to a 5-1 deficit and took Craiglow down to cut the lead to 5-3 with 1:20 left in the opening period. Yonushonis cut Craiglow loose and began working for another take down, which he got, cutting the Craiglow lead to 6-5. Yonushonis turned the simple take down into a pinning combination and got the fall at the 2:40 mark. The win made the final score 39-7 Penn State and improved Yonushonis' record to 17-4. Craiglow fell to 0-4.

Penn State amassed a whopping 14 bonus points in the match, with three pins, a technical fall and a forfeit. The win was the most lopsided Nittany Lion victory over Ohio State since Penn State joined the Big Ten for the 1992-93 season. That year, Penn State downed OSU 30-6 in Rec Hall in what was the most lopsided Lion win prior to this outing. Penn State improved to 12-7 all-time vs. Ohio State as well.

"We wrestled well tonight," Sunderland said. "But we have another tough one on Sunday against Purdue. We need to build on this and carry the momentum into Conseco Fieldhouse. Purdue poses a real threat to us because there are some very tough match-ups in that dual. We need to stay focused and wrestle even better to beat Purdue on Sunday."

Sunderland's Nittany Lions improved to 12-4 with the victory, 4-3 in Big Ten action. Ohio State fell to 5-13, 0-8 Big Ten. Penn State is now 7-1 on the road with five of those wins coming vs. ranked teams.

The Nittany Lions will close out the regular season against Purdue on Sunday in their next outing. Penn State and the Boilermakers will tangle on Sunday at noon in Indianapolis' Conseco Fieldhouse. The match can be heard live locally on WBLF 970 AM and will be streamed live at GoPSUsports.com
