    Oregon State downs Northern Colorado

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- With three individual wins over ranked grapplers, Oregon State Wrestling notched a 21-12 victory in its home-opening dual inside Gill Coliseum.

In front of a crowd of 887, the Beavers won seven of ten bouts to earn the victory over a challenging Northern Colorado team with five ranked opponents.

"Both teams have a lot of freshman so we just had to get out some wins," head coach Jim Zalesky said. "There were a lot of tough matches that could have went either way so we just found a way to win them."

Devan Turner, Aaron Olmos and Colt Doyle each came out with wins over ranked opponents in each of their respective bouts.

Another quick start for the Beavers helped the team build an early lead with Brandon Kaylor starting things off at 125 pounds. Kaylor tallied three takedowns and a riding time point in an 8-4 decision over Jace Koelzer to put three quick points on the board for Oregon State.

The Beavers would win their next two matches starting with Devan Turner at 133 pounds. No. 19 Turner earned his 17th win of the season in a ranked match over No. 17 Moscha Schwartz. A 7-3 decision gave Turner the win in an anticipated matchup at 133 pounds.

Just one bout later, Grant Willits kept the momentum rolling with a 7-5 decision over the Bears' Chris Sandoval to improve to 13-7 on the season.

The Beavers would drop their next two bouts at 149 and 157 pounds which brought the team score to 9-6 momentarily.

Lane Stigall (149) earned a last-second takedown but Northern Colorado's Andrew Ailrez earned the 7-5 decision. Logan Meek fell in a 6-2 decision to the Bears' Nate Moore.

Next, 165-pound Aaron Olmos notched an impressive 9-3 decision over No. 25 Austin Matthews in a crucial win at the midway point of the dual. Olmos' three takedowns and a pair of escapes helped him earn his sixth decision of the year.

174-pound Jackson McKinney was pinned by Billy Higgins (0:24) in the next bout which suddenly evened the score to 12 apiece with only three bouts to go.

The team would finish strong down the stretch with No. 33 Colt Doyle (184) making the most of his ranked matchup against No. 28 Alan Clothier for a 4-2 decision. Doyle earned his 13th win of the season and improved to 3-1 in duals.

At 197 pounds, J.J. Dixon finished with two takedowns and an escape for a 6-1 decision while accumulating over four minutes of riding time.

To finish things off, Jamarcus Grant came away with a double overtime victory over Robert Winters Jr. to seal the team win. A late takedown in the heavyweight bout helped Grant notch his 13th win of the season and provided the final score of 21-12.
