Old Dominion's 125-pounder, Jerome Robinson gained the Monarchs six team points as he won via forfeit.
In the 133-pound match, Scott Festejo wrestled Rider's No. 24 Jimmy Morris. After two scoreless periods, Festejo racked up a two-point takedown and a two-point near-fall and went onto defeat Morris 5-2. ODU jumped out to a 9-0 lead over Rider.
No. 13 Chris Mecate took on Vinny Favia is a battle of 141-pounders. Mecate jumped off to a quick 5-0 start. In the second period, Mecate escaped which was followed by a Favia takedown. No scoring took place in the third period and Mecate won 6-2, which extended ODU's lead to 12-0 over Rider.
No. 30 Alexander Richardson (149) held onto a 1-0 lead after two periods with Rider's Curt Delia. Delia escaped and tied the match at 1-1 with 20 seconds remaining, but Richardson's nearly two minutes of riding-time gave him a 2-1 victory.
Brennan Brumley went up against No. 27 Zac Cibula in the 157-pound match. Cibula was an NCAA qualifier in 2011. Brumley managed to escape in the second period and took a 1-0 lead into the final two minutes of the match. Cibula started the third period with an escape and tied the match at 1-1. Brumley and Cibula would need a tiebreaker session before Brumley was able to escape and defeat Cibula 2-1 in a very intense and competitive match.
In the 165-pound match, Rider's No. 16 Ramon Santiago possessed a 4-0 lead over Brett Miller after two periods of wrestling. To begin the third period, Santiago took Miller down. Santiago ended up winning by major decision (8-0) and gave Rider their first four points of the dual.
Marcus Johnson (174) squared-off with returning NCAA qualifier No. 31 James Brundage. Brundage racked-up three takedowns in the first two periods on his way to a 7-3 victory over Johnson. ODU's lead was now cut to 18-7.
Rider's Ryan Wolfe (184) jumped out to a 7-1 lead after one period over ODU's Austin Coburn. Wolfe never looked back as he gained four more team points for Rider after winning via major decision over Coburn (11-1). Rider now trailed the Monarchs 18-11.
No. 31 Jacob Henderson and No. 29 Don McNeil had a showdown at 197-pounds. After a scoreless first period, Henderson started the second period with an escape. With 20 seconds remaining in the second period, Henderson took McNeil down and extended his lead to 3-0. McNeil would later escape twice; however, Henderson ended up sealing a victory not only for himself (3-2) but for the Monarchs as well.
In the battle of big boys, ODU's Matt Tourdot faced-off with Rider's Greg Velasco. After a scoreless first period, Velasco started the second period with an escape. Tourdot started the third period with an escape of his own and tied the match at 1-1. With 15 seconds left in the match, Tourdot was able to take Velasco down and earn a 3-2 victory.
