    Northern Iowa adds Illinois prep to recruiting class

    University of Northern Iowa wrestling head coach Brad Penrith announced the signing of Christian Brantley (Homewood, Ill./Mt. Carmel HS) to a National Letter-of-Intent to wrestle for the Panthers in 2007-08.

    Brantley captured the Illinois state title in the 215-pound weight class as a senior. Brantley tallied a 40-2 mark and notched a 172 takedowns in 2006-07. Brantley is ranked No. 5 by the Amateur Wrestling News, No. 9 by W.I.N. Magazine and No. 13 by InterMat in the 215-pound national rankings.

    Brantley is a two-time all-American and a three-time state placewinner. He is also a freshman-sophomore state champion in Illinois. He earned state titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman. Brantley placed first at the Northern Plains tournament as well.

    He served as team captain and was a member of the National Honor Society.

    Brantley joins Pat Mahan (Owatonna, Minn.) in the Panthers' 2007 recruiting class.
