    Northern Colorado edges Utah Valley

GREELEY, Colo. -- The Northern Colorado Bears wrestled in their second to last dual of the season on Friday night, defeating the Utah Valley Wolverines, 19-18.

UNC won five of the ten matches, including decision wins at 125, 157 and 184, with bonus point wins at 165 and 197.

True freshman Jesse Reed picked up the first win of the night for the Bears with what was also his first dual win of his collegiate career. Reed fought hard in the first period, earning a quick escape after being taken down, followed by a takedown of his own to go into the second period up 3-2. He rode tough in the second, not letting his opponent up for the entire two minutes. Reed then managed another escape and takedown in the third period to make the final score 7-2 with the riding time advantage.

"Jesse has made a ton of improvement," head coach Troy Nickerson said. "A perfect example would be that he wrestled this same opponent in early November at the Cowboy Open and only beat him 3-1. He knows he's getting better, and he's constantly doing the right things to continue to improve."

The Bears dropped the remaining three matches going into intermission, but Eleazar De Luca came through for the Bears at 157 pounds, picking up another decision win over UVU's Raider Lofthouse. De Luca and Lofthouse had a back and forth first period, each picking up a takedown and escape to keep them deadlocked at 3-3. An escape for De Luca to start the period, followed by a UVU takedown and yet another escape for De Luca kept them tied to go into the third period, 5-5. De Luca picked up a takedown to take the lead, and would end up taking the match by decision, 7-6.

Immediately following, Keilan Torres picked up a win of his own, this time with bonus points. Torres took multiple committed shots throughout the match, and was able to continuously run through Humphereys to earn an eight-point win. Three takedowns in the first period alone put him up 6-2, and another two, along with an escape and the riding time advantage, gave hisTorres the 12-4 major decision, tacking on four team points for the Bears.

Tanner Davis picked up his second dual win of the season, notching a 3-1 decision over Will Sumner to keep the Bears within five points of Utah Valley overall. Davis managed to hold Sumner down for 1:30 of the second period before giving up the escape, and picked up a huge reversal just ten seconds into the final period to give himself a 2-1 lead. Holding on the remainder of the match, he had more than enough riding time for the advantage point to make it 3-1. At the close of his match, the Bears were only down 18-13 in the dual, giving the Bears one last shot at the win.

Redshirt senior Trent Noon took the mat for the final match of the night, and he wasted no time in going out for the win. It took him only 16 seconds to pick up a takedown, and just another 30 to add a four-point nearfall. Working hard for the fall, it was just ten seconds later that the official would slap the mat, giving Noon the pin for six team points, and the Bears their first Big 12 dual win of the season.

"This is how we expect Trent to wrestle every time he goes out there. It's believing that he can go out there and do that every time because that's what champions do."

The Bears are at home next Wednesday, Feb. 17, for their final dual of the season. UNC will host Air Force for a 7:00pm dual that will also serve as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day.
