Nick Moore pinned Brandon Kingsley to give Iowa a 6-0 lead after the opening match (Photo/Mark Beshey, The Guillotine)The Hawkeye senior 165-pounder opened Friday night's dual meet against top-ranked Minnesota by pinning Brandon Kingsley, which helped propel Iowa to a 23-12 victory in front of 13,630 fans at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
After giving up the first takedown, Moore battled back to tie the match at 2-2 in the second period. He then countered a Kingsley attack and used a whipover to pin the Gopher sophomore at 4:27.
"He got a dose of some heavy hips and then it just felt good when I locked it up," said Moore, who is ranked seventh at 165 pounds. "It was a good hold."
The Hawkeyes carried the momentum to 174 pounds, where second-ranked Mike Evans remained undefeated on the season with a 3-1 win in sudden victory over fourth-ranked Logan Storley. The two Big Ten rivals traded escapes in the second and third periods. Then, 27 seconds into sudden victory, Evans shot a double leg and Storley attempted to counter by rolling through, but the Hawkeye senior was awarded the match-winning takedown. It was Evans' second straight win over Storley, who still leads their all-time series 3-2.
"He tried to scramble out, but it's overtime," said Evans. "With the rules that got implemented over the past like two years, when you get put down, it's two. That's it. It's over, especially in overtime."

"That was probably the match of the meet, so good for Evans. But when you're taking a guy down there you don't relax even on a whistle. You wrestle that situation just like it's regulation. Keep your hips down."
At 184 pounds, Iowa's Sammy Brooks stretched the Hawkeyes' lead to 12-0 by registering a 13-7 decision over No. 11 Brett Pfarr in a pivotal match. The eighth-ranked Brooks gave up the opening takedown, but responded with a takedown of his own in the first period and added two takedowns in each of the last two periods to pull away for a comfortable victory.
Minnesota got on the scoreboard at 197 pounds when sixth-ranked Scott Schiller edged previously unbeaten Nathan Burak, 3-1, to cut the deficit to 12-3. With the match tied 1-1, Schiller scored the only takedown of the match in the final five seconds off a double leg.
Iowa's Bobby Telford picked up a 6-4 over No. 13 Michael Kroells at heavyweight to extend Iowa's lead to 15-3 at intermission.
The Hawkeyes came out of intermission strong as Thomas Gilman scored early and often in a 23-7 technical fall victory over true freshman Ethan Lizak at 125 pounds.
"He's really offensive and getting to his best stuff, and it really doesn't matter if you scout him because he's fast, and I call that wrestling fast," Brands said of Gilman, who earned his 20th victory in 21 matches this season.

Nick Dardanes opened up a 2-1 match in the third period against No. 5 Josh Dziewa with an escape and two takedowns for a convincing 7-2 win.
At 149 pounds, Iowa's second-ranked Brandon Sorensen and Minnesota's Jake Short battled to scoreless tie after two periods. In the third period Sorensen earned an early escape and late takedown to win 4-0 with an additional point added for riding time. The freshman Sorenson is now 25-2 on the season.
In the final match of the dual meet, top-ranked Dylan Ness of Minnesota, who has battling a sickness all week, earned a gutty, come-from-behind 11-9 victory over No. 15 Mike Kelly at 157 pounds. Kelly led 8-5 in the third period before Ness scored a takedown off a bear hug with two nearfall points to take the lead and then held on for the win to remain unbeaten on the season at 23-0.

He did it for himself and he did it for his team. I think that's an unbelievable amount of courage for a guy this young to do that kind of thing."
With the dual meet victory, Iowa improves to 11-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big Ten, which gives the Hawkeyes sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. However, it would be hard to tell that was the case listening to the winning coach after the dual meet.
"Overall, we've got work to do," said Brands. "Even Gilman's got work to do. We've just got to keep putting an edge on these guys. I don't think it's a matter of putting a grade on it as much as it is to keep moving forward."
Minnesota drops to 10-1 on the season and 6-1 in the conference.
"We just didn't come out and wrestle the way we should have tonight," said Schiller. "We kind of started off on the wrong foot. It's hard to come out of a hole like that. In any match you definitely don't want to start off down in a hole like that, but we've got to find a way to win."
It was the second-largest crowd ever to witness a Gopher/Hawkeye dual meet.
"I was happy with the crowd, but I wasn't happy for the crowd," said Robinson, who is in his 29th season as Minnesota's head wrestling coach. "We didn't give them a show."
