"Dom Bradley did a great job in his first weekend out," Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith said. "He got a pin and two wins. That's impressive for a redshirt freshman. I was also really pleased with how Max (Askren) competed this weekend. He wrestled really consistent today. Also, Marcus (Hoehn) looked solid. He's finishing his takedowns and has gained a lot more confidence which shows in his wrestling."
Dual competition began at the 157 pound weight class with Tiger senior Emanuel Brooks (Cahokia, Ill.) earning an 11-6 win over Ryan Ochalek. The Bison of Bucknell evened the score after 17th-ranked Andy Rendos pulled off a 3-1 upset in overtime over No. 1 ranked Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.)
"Nick wrestled hard but didn't get the final takedown for the win," Smith said. "He got reversed at the buzzer in first 30 second overtime. He escaped in the second 30 second period, but just didn't get the takedown."
The Tigers were quick to respond, rattling off four straight victories beginning with fourth-ranked Raymond Jordan's (New Bern, N.C.) 13-3 win by major decision over Shane Riccio at 174 pounds.
"Raymond looked dominating this weekend," Smith said. "He's really going to be someone fun to watch compete throughout the course of the season."
Redshirt freshman Dorian Henderson (Columbus, Ga.) shook off yesterday's loss when he met at center circle with David Thompson at 184 pounds. Henderson recorded four takedowns and held Thompson to only two escapes, finishing the afternoon match with an 11-3 decision, his first win as a Tiger starter.
"Dorian wrestled smarter and more controlled in his match today," Smith said. It was good to see him go out and get his first collegiate win."
All-American Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) returned to the mat at 197 pounds and recorded a 20-4 technical fall over Jay Hahn. Both of Askren's wins on this very young season have been bonus point victories, the first, yesterday, recorded by injury default.
Competing at heavyweight, Bradley collected his first win by fall as a member of Missouri's lineup, pinning Sean LoCurto in 1:45. Bradley quickly took his Bison opponent down and turned him for the fall.
Missouri suffered back-to-back losses at the 125 pound and 133 pound weight class, allowing the Bison to pull within nine points of the Tigers, 22-13. Senior Marcus Hoehn came through with the Tiger's final win of the dual, a 5-2 decision over Luke Chohany.
"Marcus lost to Luke last year, 5-2," Smith said. "For Marcus to come out and finish his shots like he did today was good to see. He really impressed me this weekend."
Missouri will continue its season-opening road trip with a Noon (CT) dual against Bucknell, Sunday, Nov. 15. The Tigers will then return home to host Hofstra, Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. (CT) in the first-ever Wrestling Supports Wrestling event. Tickets for the Missouri vs. Hofstra dual can be purchased by calling 1-800-CAT-PAWS or at the Mizzou Arena Ticket Office. Fans are strongly encouraged to pre-order their tickets to the Nov. 22 dual.
