North Dakota State sent out arguably their best wrestler at 125 pounds in the first match of the night. Mizzou redshirt freshman Boomer Boyd (13-8) got the start against the No. 6-ranked Trent Sprenkle. Sprenkle only needed a couple of takedowns to control the match, and would eventually give the Bison a four-point team lead after the first weight class with a win by major decision, 13-2. The four-point deficit marked the first time that Mizzou had trailed in a dual meet in 2012-13.
The deficit was short lived, as senior-captain Nathan McCormick (21-2) only needed 4:36 to give the Tigers the lead. McCormick tallied three takedowns in the first period for a 6-2 lead, and with 24 seconds remaining in the second, McCormick tilted Josh Rodriguez for the pin and six team points.
Mizzou added a win by decision and a major at 141 and 149. Trevor Jauch (22-6) started at 141 pounds and got off to a quick start against his counterpart, Mark Erickson.Jauch took a five-point lead early in the first period with a takedown and a three-point nearfall immediately following. Jauch added a takedown in the second, and after a scoreless third he was victorious with an 8-1 decision.After a fourth place finish at the Southern Scuffle in early January, DrakeHoudashelt (17-7) came back to the Hearnes Center with the same intensity and aggression. Houdashelt defeated Joe Garner by major decision, his seventh of the season and his fourth in dual meets. The sophomore accumulated six takedowns and a two-point nearfall in his match.
After a forfeit at 157 pounds, Missouri had a commanding 19-4 lead. No. 10 Zach Toal (16-9)took the mat against No. 6 Steven Monk in one of the more anticipated matches of the night. Monk had a great defense against Mizzou’s junior and went on to win 3-0. A takedown in the first period is all Monk needed to get his 25th win of the season.
Senior Todd Porter (20-6) improved his perfect dual record to 8-0 with a win at 174 pounds. Porter has been a huge asset in dual meets, and after his 10-4 decision over NDSU’s Kurtis Julson, Porter has contributed 26 team points to the Tigers in his first year as a starter. Porter now has a team leading 30 takedowns in dual bouts after posting two in the first period, one in the second, and a finaltakedown in the final frame tonight.
The Bison also failed to send out a grappler at 184 pounds to face off against Mizzou’s sixth-ranked Mike Larson, which officially sealed the victory for the Tigers. Brent Haynes (21-4), coming off his 100th career victory at the Southern Scuffle, added another to his fantastic career with an 11-2 major over Kallen Kleinschmidt. Haynes added five points via the nearfall in the 2nd period to put the match out of reach. He finished the match with 2:36 of riding time.
The top-ranked Dom Bradley put on a great night-capper for the fans at the Hearnes with some huge takedowns en route to a win by technical fall, his first of the year. Bradley took down his opponent John Gusewelle three times in the first, andadded two three-point nearfalls as well. Bradley nearly had Gusewelle finished about a minute into the first frame but couldn’t manage to get his shoulders flat on the mat. Bradley had accumulated 2:53 of riding time by the end of the second period, and finally ended the bout at 6:39 with a takedown. 19-4 was the final.
The Tigers, now 8-0, will be back in action tomorrow to face off against new conference foeCentral Michigan (9-3) at 1 p.m. The Chippewas are ranked 11th in Division I and have won the MAC Conference 11 straight years. It is sure to be a great day for Mizzou Wrestling as many of the former Mizzou Wrestlers will be in attendance, including Bellator MMA Lightweight World Champion Michael Chandler. Chandler recently defended his world title this past Thursday, and will be honored during the meet. It is also Military Appreciation Day, and the first 300 fans will receive a Mizzou Wrestling camouflage t-shirt.
