Michigan blanks Olivet in season opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team opened its 2012-13 season in commanding fashion, shutting out Olivet, 46-0, on Thursday evening (Nov. 1) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines earned bonus points in nine of 10 matches, including three pins and one technical fall.

All five freshmen in the lineup were victorious in their collegiate dual-meet debuts. Freshman Taylor Massa (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) headlined the group with a third-period fall against Dan Fleet at 165 pounds, building a sizable lead on four takedowns and six back points before tossing Fleet for the pin at 5:30.

The Wolverines also earned pins from senior/juniors Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) and Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) at 149 and 174 pounds, respectively. Grajales gave up the first takedown to Gage Pederson in the opening seconds but shook off the Comet wrestler late in the period before settling into a headlock for the pin at 2:58. Yates scored on six takedowns -- three apiece in the first and second periods -- before putting Josh Crawford on his back late in the middle frame, ending the bout at 4:19. Michigan's two-year starter at 165 pounds, it was Yates' first match at the heavier weight class.

Senior/junior Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) earned a dominant 18-2 technical fall over Payne Blanchard in his return to the lineup at 125 pounds. The Wolverine wrestler scored two takedowns and six back points -- on a pair of three-point tilts -- in the first period and added a quick reversal and another tilt to pad his lead to 13 points midway through the second. After earning a point on an illegal scissors around the head call, Boyle finished on a takedown out of a scramble to end the match at the 4:49 mark.

Freshman Rossi Bruno (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) and sophomore/freshman Camryn Jackson (Lansing, Mich./Eastern HS) claimed back-to-back major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, to win in their first ever appearances at Keen Arena. Bruno scored on three takedowns -- one in each period -- and earned a late three-point near fall to win 11-2, while Jackson converted on four double legs, including two in the final 20 seconds of the third to claim a 10-2 victory.

Michigan's other debut winners were junior/sophomore Jake Salazar (Midway, Utah/Wasatch HS) at 157 pounds, freshman Jordan Thomas (Gowen, Mich./Greenville HS) at 184 and sophomore/freshman Justin Dozier (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven HS) at heavyweight. Junior/sophomore Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) earned a 14-3 major decision at 197 pounds to round out the Wolverine effort.
