“Today was a great day,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “The guys wrestled well and looked great. We scored a lot of bonus points which is important at this time. I am very proud of them.”
McCoy and the Terps (15-4, 4-1 ACC) started Saturday’s conference swing in Durham, N.C. against the Blue Devils (2-6-1, 0-5 ACC) in dominating fashion.
After Shane Gentry and Lou Ruland each won by forfeit, Maryland grapplers earned five consecutive wins by pin fall. No. 17 Jon Kohler, Ben Dorsay, No. 3 Josh Asper and No. 19 Mike Letts all pinned their opponents within the first three minutes of the opening period.
Corey Peltier and Christian Boley earned decisions at 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to close out the 48-0 Terrapin shutout, the team’s first of the season.
Riding the momentum from the squad’s afternoon dominance, the Terps traveled down Tobacco Road to Raleigh to challenge the NC State Wolfpack (9-10, 1-4).
Coming off wins by forfeit, Gentry and Ruland used their fresh legs to rack up bonus points for the Terps in the first two matches thanks to 16-0 and 22-7 technical falls.
In the 141-pound match, Kohler trailed NC State’s Darius Little late in the third before using an escape in the final 60 seconds and the one-point riding time advantage to force overtime. Twenty seconds into bonus time, Kohler successfully executed a takedown to earn the two-point win.
After Darrion Caldwell, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, earned the technical fall over Dex Lederer, Maryland countered with 14th-ranked John’s 8-4 decision over Colton Palmer.
Asper and Letts each scored at least 20 points against NC State’s Nijel Jones and Colin Genthert to pick up technical falls and increase the Terrapin lead to 29-5.
Boley and Spencer Myers pitched in a pair of decisions giving Maryland 18 combined match victories and the team’s fourth conference win in 2011. The Terps have now earned at least four ACC wins in five of their last six seasons.
McCoy and the Terps return home Sunday to honor their senior class against winless George Mason at 1 p.m. in the Comcast Pavilion.
Due to the men’s basketball game against North Carolina State at 5:30 p.m., all wrestling fans seeking parking on Sunday should park in Lot 4b behind the Comcast Center.
