Jackson's upset highlights Michigan's road victory

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Sophomore/freshman Camryn Jackson (Lansing, Mich./Eastern HS) earned a big upset decision at 141 pounds to headline the No. 16-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's 21-18 victory over No. 10 Oregon State on Friday evening (Nov. 16) at the Beavers' Gill Coliseum. The Wolverines won five individual matches, earning three bonus wins, to claim their second straight win over a ranked opponent.

Jackson scored four takedowns, including two takedowns in the final 30 seconds of the third period, to knock off No. 2-ranked Mike Mangrum, 10-8, and extend U-M's early advantage to 10 points after three matches. After each wrestler scored on two takedowns in the first and second periods, Jackson elected to start neutral in the third trailing 6-5 and with Mangrum owning riding-time advantage. The score evened when Mangrum was hit with a second stall call before Jackson scored on a double leg to take a narrow lead with 30 seconds remaining. Mangrum escaped again even the score -- factoring in the riding-time point -- but Jackson finished on another double leg off a restart with 15 seconds to go, riding out the match to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Jackson's decision followed back-to-back wins from senior/junior Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) and freshman Rossi Bruno (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Boyle cruised to an 12-3 major decision over Pat Rollins at the opening weight, scoring on two takedowns and two reversals while adding a two-point tilt in the first period. Boyle, ranked 14th, earned his first reversal quickly in the third period and after letting Rollins loose with the major in mind, gave up a double-leg takedown midway through the frame. He promptly reversed the Beaver wrestler again and rode out the match to accumulate 4:32 in time advantage.

Bruno used a late takedown to secure a 3-1 decision against Drew Van Anrooy at 133 pounds. After a scoreless first period, the wrestlers traded escapes early in the second and third to keep the score deadlocked late in the match. The Wolverine rookie failed to score on a high-crotch attempt on the edge midway through the final period but finished on his next attempt, shooting in deep on a single leg and working through the ensuing to score the winning takedown with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Beavers responded to Jackson's upset with decisions from its ranked wrestlers at 149 and 157 pounds before Michigan earned big points with consecutive bonus wins from freshman Taylor Massa (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) and senior/junior captain Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS).

Massa, ranked 10th, rolled to a dominant 21-3 technical fall against Alex Elder at 174 pounds, scoring on two takedowns and earning 15 total back points. The wrestlers traded takedowns in the opening minute, with Elder countering a Massa attack to score his points. The Wolverine freshman escaped and immediately took Elder to his back for five points. He tilted him to add six more back points in the first and earned two more three-point near falls in the second to end the match at 4:29.

Yates earned a first-period fall against Austin Morehead at 174 pounds, jumping out to a quick five-point advantage before ending the bout at the 2:54 mark. The Wolverine captain, ranked 14th, got Morehead in a half from the neutral position and took him down, working to turn him to earn the pin just before the buzzer. Yates is 4-0 on the season with four bonus wins.

The Beavers claimed the final three matches, earning bonus points with a first-period pin at 184 pounds. Taylor Meeks, ranked 13th at 197 pounds, fought off a deep second-period shot before using a late counter takedown to edge junior/sophomore Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy), 3-1.

Needing to avoid the pin in the final match to preserve the Wolverine victory, sophomore/freshman Justin Dozier (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven HS) dropped a 13-8 decision to seventh-ranked Chad Hanke at heavyweight. He countered a Hanke shot midway through the third period to hold the Beaver wrestler to a decision.

The Wolverines (3-1) will close out their west-coast road swing on Sunday (Nov. 17), heading to Palo Alto, Calif., to face Stanford at 2 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion.
