    Hofstra scores 4 major decisions in 38-4 win over Long Island

    BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- With victories in nine out of 10 weight classes, Hofstra picked up its first win of the season in dominating fashion with a 38-4 result over Long Island Sunday afternoon from the Pratt Recreation Center. The win puts Hofstra at 1-1 on the year, while the Sharks slip to 1-2.

    Redshirt freshman Ross McFarland started the afternoon with a 12-2 major decision victory over James Langan at 174 pounds, the first of four wins by major decision for the Pride. Senior Charles Small followed up McFarland's major decision win with one of his own, posting an 11-3 result over Dan Shafran.

    Junior Trey Rogers won his match at 197 pounds via technical fall with a score of 24-9 against TJ Franden, and redshirt junior Zachary Knighton-Ward tallied a 12-4 major decision win over Tim Nagosky at 285 pounds. Junior Dylan Ryder scored the only win by fall of the afternoon with a pin of Bryce Cockrell at 3:43 of the 125-pound bout. Ryder, who is ranked No. 31 in his weight class by The Open Mat, carried a 2-0 lead on Cockrell going into the second period and scored three back points before earning the pin with 17 seconds remaining before the buzzer sounded.

    Deven Matthews scored a major decision win for the Sharks with a 11-3 score over redshirt sophomore Matthew Templeton at 133 pounds, but the Pride responded with wins in the next four weight classes. At 141 pounds, redshirt senior Vinny Vespa secured an 8-3 decision, and graduate student Greg Gaxiola scored his first win as a Hofstra wrestler with a 16-4 major decision over Anthny Dushaj at 149 pounds. Junior Holden Heller scored a win by technical fall over Rhise Royster at 157 pounds, winning the match with a 17-2 score, and in the final match of the dual meet, redshirt senior Ricky Stamm handled Kenny Cooper en route to a 9-2 decision at 165 pounds.

    There were also three extra matches that counted only towards the record of the individual wrestler. Sophomore Reece Heller at 174 pounds scored a quick win by fall at 1:06, and junior Corey Langner at 184 pounds recorded a technical fall win by score of 17-2. Freshman Ericson Velasquez also wrestled at 184 pounds for Hofstra.

    Sacred Heart is next on the docket for Hofstra. The two teams will meet on Friday, January 29, at 6 p.m. from Fairfield, Connecticut.

    Notes:
    - The Pride are now 8-0 all-time against Long Island, and 2-0 since Long Island moved to the Division I level in 2019.
    - Reece Heller earned the 20th win of his Hofstra career.
    - Dylan Ryder picked up the 11th-career win by fall.
