Goodale earns 100th win as Rutgers beats Drexel

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Rutgers wrestling team earned a 26-10 win over Drexel in Philadelphia, Pa., on Friday as sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale picked up his 100th career victory at the helm. The Scarlet Knights won seven of the 10 contested bouts. RU notched three bonus point wins, including a pin by No. 16 freshman HWT Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) and major decisions by 20th-ranked redshirt junior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) and No. 13 senior 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.).

With the win, Goodale became the fourth Rutgers head coach to record 100 wins. John Sacchi (166, 17 seasons), Deane Oliver (158, 21 seasons) and Dick Voliva (142, 23 seasons) are the other three. The Scarlet Knights improved to 16-3 overall, while Drexel fell to 8-11. RU is now 13-11 all-time against the Dragons.

The match started with three-straight Rutgers wins beginning at HWT as Smith came up big for the Scarlet Knights early, winning by fall over Jon Max Wright of Drexel at the 4:18 mark. The pin was Smith’s eighth of the season.

After an RU decision by Langel at 125 pounds, Dellefave defeated Dragon Clayton Lutzow in the form of a 12-4 major decision. Dellefave’s victory was his 10th-straight.

The Scarlet Knights took two of the next three bouts before Zannetti earned his sixth bonus-point victory of the 2013 campaign by downing Kevin Matyas, 11-3, to secure the match by giving Rutgers a 23-7 lead with two bouts to go.

Classmate Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.), ranked No. 10 at 184 pounds, followed with an 11-5 decision over Bryan Sternlieb of Drexel. The win marked the 104th of Rinaldi’s career, good for a tie for seventh on Rutgers’ all-time list.

The Scarlet Knights next host Penn State on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. in the RAC for their final regular season dual of the season.
