Fund established for former Wyoming wrestler Martinez

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- A fund has been established to defray medical costs for Michael Martinez, a former University of Wyoming wrestler.

Martinez suffered second- and third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body during a fire at his home in recent weeks. He extinguished the flames and drove himself to medical care and was then life-flighted to a hospital in Albuquerque, N.M., for treatment. After spending three weeks in the burn center, he is home in Pagosa Springs, Colo., to continue his recovery.

A three-time conference champion (2009-11) and four-time NCAA qualifier from 2009-12 for the Cowboys, Martinez concluded his Wyoming career last spring with 116 wins, No. 9 in UW history. He was a member of three NCAA West Regional tournament title teams.

Those who would like to contribute to the fund to help defray his medical costs may do so at any Wells Fargo Bank in the United States under the name “Michael Martinez Donation Fund” or may contribute online directly to the fund through PayPal.
