Fast start propels South Dakota State past Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- South Dakota State swept the upper weights, including winning two matches by fall, as the 20th-ranked Jackrabbits remained undefeated in Big 12 Conference duals this season with a 33-11 road win at Wyoming Friday night.

The Jackrabbits improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 against Big 12 foes. Wyoming dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-1 against league opponents.

With the dual starting at 174 pounds, David Kocer jump-started the Jackrabbits' dominating performance with a 22-3 technical fall over Chaz Polson.

The SDSU lead grew to 17-0 through three matches with back-to-back pins by Martin Mueller and eighth-ranked Nate Rotert. Mueller trailed most of his 184-pound match against Kyle Pope, including 10-6 in the final minute, before putting Pope on his back with five seconds remaining. Rotert, meanwhile, needed only 1 minute and 51 seconds to stick Nate Shaw.

Jackrabbit heavyweight Alex Macki added to the sweep of the upper weights with a 5-3 overtime decision over Brandon Tribble. It was Macki's second consecutive overtime victory.

Wyoming picked up its first win of the night as the dual flipped over to the lower weights with 125-pounder Drew Templeman scoring a 12-0 major decision over the Jackrabbits' Ben Gillette.

The Jackrabbits seized the momentum back with their third pin of the night as sixth-ranked Seth Gross improved to 17-1 on the season with his sixth pin of the year - and third consecutive in dual competition - with a first-period fall over Ronald Stevens in the 133-pound bout.

The Cowboys' two other victories came from ranked wrestlers. Eighth-ranked Bryce Meredith notched a 13-4 major decision over Isaac Andrade at 141 pounds and 17th-ranked Archie Colgan knocked off Logan Peterson, 10-5, at 157 pounds.

However, the Jackrabbits' Alex Kocer and Luke Zilverberg knocked off Wyoming's two other ranked wrestlers. A two-time NCAA qualifier, Kocer improved to 16-4 overall with a 12-2 major decision over 16th-ranked Cole Mendenhall in the 149-pound matchup.

The reigning Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, Zilverberg recorded his third consecutive overtime victory with a takedown of No. 15 Branson Ashworth in the second overtime period for an 8-6 decision to close out the dual.

SDSU closes out its weekend road swing with a Big 12 dual Sunday at Air Force. Start time is 11 a.m. Mountain (noon Central).
