    Duke hammers Campbell, 37-3

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- The Duke wrestling team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, hammering Campbell University, 37-3, at Carter Gymnasium. The Blue Devils improve to 1-8 on the year while Campbell falls to 3-9.

Duke won nine of the 10 weight classes, including the first eight matches of the evening.

"It was a nice win," stated Duke Head Coach Clar Anderson. "I'm obviously real pleased with the outcome of the match. Basically, we had more confidence. We felt we could beat these guys and I think we need to learn to wrestle to this level every time we go out."

The dual meet began at 125 pounds and the Blue Devils grabbed a 3-0 lead on sophomore Kellan McKeon's 3-2 win over Richie Apolinar. Freshman Michael Degli Obizzi followed McKeon's victory by recording the only fall of the night, pinning R.J. Mazzatta in 2:49 at 133 pounds.

Sophomore Wes Kuser won in impressive fashion at 141 pounds, scoring a 17-4 major decision victory over Elliot Berger. Junior Daniel Shvartsman pushed Duke's lead to 16-0 with a 10-6 decision win over Steve Wiktorek at 149 pounds.

At 157 pounds, freshman Cameron Harms notched the second major decision victory of the night for the Blue Devils, defeating Nick Amato, 14-6. Redshirt freshman Aaron Glover followed with a 5-1 win over Brent Poynter at 165 pounds to put Duke up by 23 points.

"I was very pleased with Aaron Glover," Anderson said. "It's nice for him and his confidence going into the last few ACC matches and the ACC Tournament."

Campbell forfeited at 174 pounds, giving the Blue Devils six points to extend their lead to 29-0.

Redshirt freshman Dan Tulley then dominated Kyle Higgins, 24-4, to score a major decision victory at the 184-pound weight class.

Campbell picked up its lone win of the meet at 197 pounds as Jason Cook defeated junior Patrick Keenum, 9-5.

"I kind of feel bad for Patrick Keenum because he was leading in the match and was caught in a five-point move and ended up not being able to come back," Anderson stated.

Freshman Wade Van Sickle emphatically closed out Duke's dominating performance by scoring the fourth major decision victory of the night for the Blue Devils, defeating Jeremiah Fennell, 13-5, in the heavyweight division.

The Duke wrestling team will host ACC foe Virginia Tech on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils will finish out their home schedule next weekend as they play host to Gardner-Webb and Virginia on Saturday.
