Cowburn is a two-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class AA state champion. He has won both his state titles at 152 pounds. Cowburn has also had success in the international styles. In 2007, Cowburn was Cadet Nationals champion in Greco-Roman and was a runner-up in freestyle. Last summer, he was runner-up at Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman. He says that he will wrestle at 160 or 171 for his senior season and project as a 165 or 174-pounder in college.
"I've always wanted to go to Penn State," Cowburn told InterMat on Thursday night. "It has always been pretty high on my list. There were a few schools that I was looking at -- like Nebraska and Oklahoma State. They were really high on my list. But I think what set Penn State apart from the other schools was the training partners ... and the people that go there I know pretty well. Having the best coach at Penn State really helps a lot too. He will be able to help me reach my goals."
Cowburn said that he plans to redshirt his first season at Penn State.
