    Cornell cruises past Columbia

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell moved to 3-0 in Ivy League competition with a dominant 33-5 win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red improved to 8-2 (3-0 Ivy), while the Lions fell to 3-10 (0-1 Ivy). The win was Cornell's 81st consecutive in Ivy League competition and its 37th without a defeat all-time against conference rivals at Friedman.

The Big Red won five matches with bonus points, including three by the freshman trio of Ben Darmstadt (197), Yianni Diakomihalis (141) and Max Dean (184). Both Darmstadt and Diakomihalis earned wins by fall and Dean was one of three Big Red grapplers to earn major decision victories and one of three shutout victories on the day.

Darmstadt got the dual going at 197, earning an early second period fall over Jacob Young for his 14th of the season. The third-ranked grappler at 197 improved to 22-1 on the year. Diakomihalis never let opponent Val Miele get to the break, pinning him at 2:05 of the first to move to 23-1 on the year. It was the sixth win by fall for the rookie, who improved to 3-0 in Ivy dual meets. Dean dominated Psomas to the tune of a 10-0 major to move his mark to 21-12, including a team-best 10-0 in dual competition.

There were plenty of highlights in the win as Cornell built a 23-2 lead and cruised. Noah Baughman dominated Spencer Good at 125 en route to a 14-4 triumph, and Chaz Tucker did the only offensive scoring in a 10-4 triumph at 133. Will Koll majored tough Jacob Macalolooy 10-0 thanks to a late four-point turn to give the home team an extra bonus point. Brandon Womack rode out NCAA qualifier Tyrel White for a 2-0 win at 174 and Chris Schoenherr was impressive in his first-ever collegiate dual, moving from 149 all the way to 165 to capture a 10-5 victory over Laurence Kosoy.

The Lions had ranked wrestlers win tight battles at 285 and 157, capturing both matches by a single takedown. The Lions had a team point deducted in the day's second match for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Cornell will visit No. 23 Lock Haven tomorrow at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on YouTube.
