Cal State Bakersfield dominates 30th Annual California Collegiate Wrestling Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team wrapped up its regular season schedule with a dominating performance, winning the 30th Annual California Collegiate Wrestling Invitational Saturday at The Swamp on the campus of San Francisco State.

The Roadrunners won seven of the 10 individual titles and scored 88 points, easily cruising to the team title in the eight-team tournament. Fresno State placed second in the field with 41 points.

Bakersfield wrestlers dominated the finals in three of the weight classes. At 125 pounds, Zack Bigboy (Minneapolis, Minn./Kennedy HS) scored a first period fall over fellow freshman Brandon Zoetewey San Ramon, Calif./De la Salle HS) in another chapter of the epic battle the two have waged against each other this season. Both wrestlers scored a pair of wins by decision to advance to the finals.

At 141 pounds, the 'Runners placed two in the finals with Matt Schumm (Corona/Centennial HS) picking up the 7–6 decision victory over Jeremy Doyle (Ramona HS). A pair of Bakersfield grapplers also met in the finals at 157 pounds as Daniel Atondo (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) edged out David Garcia (Azusa/Bishop Amat HS) in a 6–5 decision.

Other victors on the day included Thomas Kimbrell (Dawsonville, Georgia/Dawson County HS) at 131 pounds, Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) at 165 pounds, Garth Wara (Madera HS) at 174 pounds and Ryan Bergman (Rocklin HS) at 197 pounds.

Busby had little trouble at 165 pounds, going 3–0 overall with a pin and two tech falls including a 16–0 shutout in the championship match.

Heavyweight Eric Parker (Ramona HS) gave Fresno State's Cody Parker a tough match when the two dueled in Bakersfield earlier this season, but the Bulldog's Parker got the better of the two Saturday. Cody Parker was able to pick up the fall early in the first period for the title.

Brandon Doyle (Ramona HS) lost a tough 11–7 decision to Chadron State's Mark Pfeiffer, ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, in the finals at 149 pounds.

The Bakersfield wrestlers take some much needed time off to prepare for the Pac–10 Conference Championships Feb. 26–27 at Maples Pavilion in Stanford.
