    Buffalo sweeps opponents at Davidson Duals

    DAVIDSON, NC -- The University at Buffalo wrestling team traveled south and picked up a trio of victories in their first dual matches of the season with three wins at the Davidson Duals.

    UB defeated Duke, 19-15, to open the day. The Bulls then cruised past Campbell (35-3) and Davidson (34-3) for a perfect 3-0 mark to open the dual meet portion of the schedule.

    Against the Blue Devils, UB opened up 15-0 lead by winning the first four matches, including three by major decision. Taylor Golba (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's) at 125, Kevin Smith (Mexico, NY/Mexico) and Andrew Stella (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) each picked up four-point major victories. Desi Green (Henrietta, NY/Rush Henrietta) then followed with a 3-2 win over Duke's Daniel Adamo in the 149-pound match for the 15-0 lead. However, the Blue Devils won the next four matches to tie the contest headed into the 197-pound bout. In the 197-pound match, UB's Jimmy Hamel (Natick, MA/Natick) scored an 11-4 major decision over Robert Holbrook to wrap up the victory for the Bulls.

    Against the Camels, UB won nine of the 10 matches with Green scoring a pin on Ethan Carmody to end the 149-pound match in the first period. The Bulls scored three other major decisions on their way to the victory.

    In the match with the host Wildcats, UB again cruised to nine wins in 10 bouts. Freshman Brett Correll (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower) won the 285-pound match by fall over Charlie Wolff in 2:44.with Green, John-Martin Cannon (Brockport, NY/Brockport), ron Majerus (Mexico, NY/Mexico) and Hamel taking major decisions.

    Smith, Stella, Green and Hamel won all three of their matches on the day.

    The Bulls remain in North Carolina for dual matches at Appalachian State on Sunday. UB will face the host Mountaineers at 2:00 pm, followed by Spartanburg Methodist at 4:00 pm.
