Bucknell tops Columbia for 10th straight victory

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Senior Victor Lopez won for the 10th time in his last 11 bouts, and Tyler Smith (10) and Tom Sleigh (19) extended long winning streaks to propel the Bucknell wrestling team to its 10th consecutive victory Friday evening in Davis Gym against Columbia. The Bison won by a 23-14 score as they completed the regular season with an impressive 12-4, 9-1 EIWA record. Columbia fell to 3-12, 1-5 EIWA.

Bucknell's winning streak is tied for the second-longest in program history. The school record for consecutive victories is 11, covering parts of the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons. This is the fourth straight year the Bison have posted double figures in victories, and the third consecutive season they have recorded at least 12 wins.

Bucknell won six of the 10 bouts on Friday and had two bonus-point victories thanks to a pin at 141 by Smith and a dominating tech fall by Sleigh at 197.

It was Senior Night at Davis Gym and the nationally ranked Lopez concluded his home career with an 11-4 decision at 157. Lopez led 8-1 through two periods as he posted the 103rd win of his career and his 23rd of the season.

Smith registered his team-high fifth fall of the year as he pinned Christian Briody with eight seconds remaining in the first period. It gave the Bison a 9-3 advantage and Bucknell never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.

Sleigh's win was the most dominant of the night as he won by a 19-0 tech fall. He posted a pair of four-point near falls and outscored Michael Bulkin 15-0 over the final two periods.

D.J. Hollingshead had the most exciting win of the night, posting a 6-4 overtime decision at 174. Hollingshead led 4-3 in the third period when the referee awarded a point to Andrew Psomas for locked hands, tying the score at 4-4. In the first sudden victory overtime period, Hollingshead scored a takedown with two seconds remaining to secure his 20th win of the year.

Freshmen Joey Gould (133) and Garrett Hoffman (184) were also victorious for the Bison with wins by decision. Both had more than three minutes of riding time in their bouts.

The night opened with a close match at 125 with freshman Jordan Gessner falling to senior Johnson Mai by a 5-4 score. Gessner recorded a two-point near fall at the buzzer of the third period that was reviewed, but the original call stood, keeping the score at 5-4, rather than an additional back point being added.

Bucknell's eight seniors – Rory Bonner, Grim Gonzalez, Tyler Greene, Logan Kerin, Joey Krulock, Lopez, Jackson Timm and Austin Wetterau – were honored during Senior Night ceremonies prior to the match.

With the regular season complete, Bucknell will now turn its attention to the EIWA Championships. The Bison are hosting the event March 3-4 in Sojka Pavilion.
