Varner named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week

IRVING, Texas -- Jake Varner (Iowa State) has been named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for his performances in competitions from Dec. 17-Jan. 5, the conference announced. Varner receives this recognition for the first time in his career.

Varner avenged his 2007 NCAA Championship loss to former Northwestern 184-pound national champion Jake Herbert with a 3-1 sudden victory, on December 30 at the Midlands Championships. The sophomore, who placed third at the Midlands last season, became the 38th ISU wrestler to earn a Midlands title. During the course of the tournament, the All-American tallied three victories by pin, including a 5:54 stick of former Nebraska standout Travis Pascoe. He also notched a 2-1 semifinal decision over No. 6 Christian Sinnott of Central Michigan. Varner has pinned four opponents and owns a 12-0 record this season.
