OSU (9-3; 3-0 Big 12) did not allow an offensive point in the dual, scoring 42 takedowns on the night in addition to its multiple nearfalls.
"It's what we hoped for,” coach John Smith said. “We haven't had a to really score bonus points. We got exposed a little bit on how to pin people. We've been struggling for wins in tough dual meets and we get in the mode of takedowns and hard rides. We missed a few things tonight, but the takedowns and aggressiveness helped separate the score. That's what you like to see. We need to focus on building each period and getting a little bit better and tougher. I felt like we did that for the most part."
The Cowboys earned nine bonus-point wins on the night, starting with ninth-ranked Eddie Klimara who defeated his opponent, Hunter Jones, with a 16-1 technical fall at 125 pounds. Klimara ended his bout early in the second period with only three takedowns. The Cowboy turned Jones for four sets of nearfall points.
"We had to come out here and get going, especially with a big dual coming this weekend,” Klimara said. “The season is coming to an end pretty soon, so we need to step up and start pushing ourselves."
True freshman Gary Wayne Harding kept the bonus points rolling with a dominant major decision at 133 pounds. The Cowboy was just short of a technical fall, surrendering only four points and racking up six takedowns en route to the 18-4 win.
In the 141-pound bout, No. 15 Dean Heil put together a flurry of points with a reversal to start the third period, followed by two sets of back points to shut out John Pezze, 15-0. The redshirt freshman is now on a four-match win streak.
"I think today’s win shows how much of a difference a week of improvement can be,” Heil said. “No college program is a bad program. Anybody can get beat on any given day. Going out and having almost every match get bonus points like that is a big deal. I think we can take from that and try to look at how we prepared this week for the dual and incorporate that into duals in the future."
At 149 pounds, senior Josh Kindig was close the sticking Brodie Zacherl but ended the match early with a 22-5 tech fall in the third period. The Cowboy is now 13-1 in his senior campaign.
In a match that started off slow, No. 18 Anthony Collica picked up the pace in the final period of the 157-pound match, scoring five takedowns. He went on to win the match 14-5.
Top-ranked 165 pounder Alex Dieringer got the first pin of the night, sticking Slade Horner in the second period. Prior to the fall, Dieringer led the match 11-3. The national champion now has eight falls on the season as well as eight consecutive wins with bonus points to add to his perfect 23-0 record.
Picking up another win at 174 pounds was sophomore Kyle Crutchmer, who bested Michael Pavasko, 9-5. Crutchmer sealed the win with a double-leg takedown in the final seconds of the match.
Nolan Boyd, ranked 18th at 184 pounds, earned the fourth and final technical fall of the night, handling Daniel Sutherland, 17-2. Boyd led the first period, 7-0, and scored 10 more points in the second period to earn the win at the 5:52 mark.
At 197 pounds, sophomore Luke Bean earned a 13-6 decision over Ryan Darch, giving him his first dual win as a Cowboy.
Marsden capped the night with quickest finish of the dual, pinning Josh Davis in only 1:30 at 285 pounds.
The Cowboys will finish their home dual season as they host four-time defending national champions Penn State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
"It's big,” Smith said. “I think if the weather cooperates with us, it ought to be attended well, but a win would be much better. It would help, definitely. It's a tough match. The match-ups are tough, and it looks very competitive. When you get in these types of matches, you've got to do your job. If we do our job well, then we have an opportunity to win. That's what we're about. We're about winning big dual meets, and we've failed to do that this year. This is a big dual for us and it's important that we learn how to win them."
