Oklahoma State improves to 7-0 after road wins over UNI, ISU

AMES, Iowa -- The fifth-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team moved to 7-0 on the season, collecting two ranked wins in road duals against Big 12 foes No. 16 Northern Iowa and No. 13 Iowa State.

The Cowboys began their day in Cedar Falls where they defeated No. 16 Northern Iowa, 20-12, to capture their first of two wins on the day before heading to Ames for a 16-15 win over No. 13 Iowa State.

Oklahoma State was led by back-to-back major decisions from No. 12 Wyatt Sheets and No. 4 Travis Wittlake. In his first dual match of the season, Sheets looked sharp defeating UNI's Cayd Lara 15-4. Leading 5-4 heading into the third period, he got a quick escape and followed with a takedown of Lara, a two-point near fall and a four-point turn, before adding riding time to close the match with 10 straight points.

Wittlake kept the pressure on the Panthers with his 12-4 major decision over Pat Schoenfelder. The sophomore stayed unbeaten and picked up his third bonus-point victory in six matches on the season.

Dusty Hone got the scoring started for the Cowboys with a hard-fought 4-2 win at 141 pounds. Starting with Hone, OSU won five straight matches, including wins from No. 4 Boo Lewallen and No. 17 Dustin Plott, who remain undefeated on the season. It wasn't until the 197-pound match when AJ Ferrari defeated Keegan Moore 10-4 that the No. 5 Cowboys clinched the dual.

No. 13 Trevor Mastrogiovanni, No. 9 Dakota Geer and heavyweight Austin Harris all lost their first matches of the season against Northern Iowa.

However, Mastrogiovanni bounced back in Ames, starting the Pokes off strong with a 6-4 sudden victory over Kysen Terukina. The freshman ranked No. 13 in his weight class moved to 7-1 in his freshman season with the win against Iowa State.

The Cyclones won the next two bouts taking a 6-3 lead before Boo Lewallen picked up a 10-4 major decision over Ben Monroe to return the lead to the Cowboys. The teams then traded victories at the middle weights with third-ranked David Carr (ISU) defeating No. 12 Wyatt Sheets 8-4 and Wittlake earning a 6-2 decision over Isaac Judge.

Sophomore Anthony Montalvo returned to the Oklahoma State lineup for the first time this season in the dual against Iowa State. Wrestling at 174 pounds this season after being the starter at 184 in 2020, Montalvo dropped his bout in the first tiebreaker period to No. 20 Julien Broderson.

Dakota Geer rebounded from his loss earlier in the day to defeat Tate Battani 6-2 making the team score 13-12 in favor of Oklahoma State. Superstar freshman AJ Ferrari had the most important match of the day when he faced fellow freshman, No. 20 Yonger Bastida. The two went into the third period tied 1-1, which is when Ferrari got a takedown, was reversed by Bastida then reversed him for a 5-3 victory.

Heavyweight Austin Harris took the mat for the Cowboys with the score 16-12 in favor of OSU and wrestled hard, but ultimately lost his second ranked match of the day to No. 9 Gannon Gremmel 6-2.

Oklahoma State will have another multi-match day next Sunday when it travels to Norman for the first Bedlam dual of the season at 1 p.m. before returning to Gallagher-Iba Arena for the first time since Jan. 10 for its second dual of the season with Little Rock.
