Oklahoma State defeats Oklahoma in Bedlam dual

NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 7 Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated Oklahoma, 25-9, Sunday at McCasland Field House and pushed its all-time series advantage over the Sooners to 135-27-10.

The Cowboys (8-3, 3-0 Big 12) won eight bouts on the day, highlighted by a major decision from top-ranked Alex Dieringer at 165 pounds and a pair of overtime wins from Anthony Collica at 157 pounds and Kyle Crutchmer at 174 pounds.

"We saw some battle matches and in the end it was takedowns that won them," coach John Smith said. "Overall, it was a better effort than what we had on Friday, from the standpoint of punching through comfort zones. That really makes a difference whether you are going to be good, great or poor."

Dieringer jumped out to a 6-2 lead in his bout with three takedowns in the opening period and added three more on the way to a 15-5 major decision. That win marks his seventh major decision of the year and seventh consecutive bonus-point win. Of his perfect 22-0 record on the year, 18 wins have come with bonus points attached.

Collica and Crutchmer both went through two overtime periods before battling out tough wins. After trading scores with OU’s No. 15 Justin DeAngelis, Collica finally outlasted him for a 10-9 decision, with the final point earned from building 16 seconds of riding time through the second set of tiebreakers.

"I'm in a lot better shape than I was," Collica said. "I got to my shots more."

Crutchmer’s overtime win featured less scoring with the match tied at 2-2 entering the second overtime, but saw him earn an escape and late takedown in the final tiebreaker as he won 5-2 over OU’s No. 17 Matt Reed.

Josh Kindig, who returned from injury today, wrestled his first bout in three weeks as he earned a 5-2 decision over Shayne Tucker at 149 pounds.

"I did the most of what I could do off the mat -- swimming, Stairmaster, lifting hard and eventually running hard," Kindig said. "A lot of it is mental, it's not all on the mat. Just thinking about wrestling all the time keeps you focused and into it. I felt great out there, I just need to get the feel of the mat back and going live."

The dual started at heavyweight as Austin Marsden knocked off OU’s 11th-ranked Ross Larson with an 8-3 decision to get the Cowboys rolling. Eddie Klimara followed that with a 9-3 decision at 125 pounds over Ryan Millhof.

The Sooners earned a fall at 133 pounds, but the Cowboys responded with six-straight wins, with Dean Heil earning an 8-3 decision at 141 pounds and Nolan Boyd winning, 6-5, at 184 pounds to join the previously mentioned Cowboy winners.

Oklahoma State returns to action next weekend as the Cowboys host Clarion Friday and Penn State Sunday in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
