Highlighting the dual were three Wisconsin (11-6-1, 2-5-1 Big Ten) wins by bonus points. At 133 lbs., Tyler Graff earned a technical fall followed by an impressive victory by sophomore Shane McQuade. McQuade collected his first pin at 141 lbs. to slate the Badgers’ second victory of the day by extra points. Logging a major decision at 197 lbs., senior Trevor Brandvold tallied UW’s final bonus point-victory.
Also capturing wins for Wisconsin was Tom Kelliher (125 lbs.), Ben Jordan (174 lbs.), Travis Rutt (184 lbs.) and Eric Bugenhagen (Hwt.).
The Badgers opened the dual with three-straight wins to boast a 14-0 advantage over MSU (9-9-0, 1-7-0 Big Ten) heading into the fourth bout.
Kelliher began the dual for the Badgers with a close 5-4 battle over Michigan State’s Eric Olanowski. The redshirt sophomore captured a takedown and an escape in the first period to lead Olanowski, who scored a two-point nearfall, 3-2, heading into the second period. Olanowski notched a takedown while Kelliher collected his second escape of the match to tie the bout at 4-4 heading into the final period. The match was still at a 4-4 deadlock at the end of the third period, but Kelliher was awarded an extra point with 2:15 of riding time to give Wisconsin a 3-0 advantage heading into 133 lbs.
No. 3 Graff notched his seventh win by technical fall of the regular season at 133 lbs. to extend Wisconsin’s lead to 8-0. Graff defeated the Spartans’ Chris Lyon, 22-6 at 6:16. In the victory, the redshirt sophomore captured eight takedowns, one 3-point nearfall, one 2-point nearfall and an escape to collect 22 points while holding Lyon to all defensive points with six escapes.
At 141 lbs., McQuade tallied a takedown early in the first period before pinning Michigan State’s Levi Stace at 1:21. The redshirt sophomore’s efforts helped Wisconsin extend its advantage to 14-0. The match marked McQuade’s fifth time wrestling at 141 lbs. after competing at 125 lbs. earlier in the season.
Michigan State answered the Badgers’ trio of wins by collecting victories in the next three bouts.
At 149 lbs., No. 20 Dan Osterman upset Wisconsin’s No. 10 Cole Schmitt to give MSU its first points of the dual. Osterman notched two takedowns in the first period to lead Schmitt, who had one escape, 4-1, heading into the second frame. The redshirt sophomore narrowed his deficit to 4-2 in the second period with another escape. Schmitt tied it up with a takedown in the third period, but with 1:11 of riding time, Osterman walked away with the 5-4 win.
Redshirt freshman Shawn Perry dropped the Badgers’ second dual of the afternoon to MSU’s Sean McMurray at 157 lbs. With a takedown, an escape and 1:09 of riding time, McMurray shut out Perry, 4-0. Perry’s loss put Michigan State within nine points of the Badgers.
MSU’s Nick Kacznowski wrapped up the Spartans’ 3-bout winning streak by defeating Wisconsin true freshman Ben Cox at 165 lbs. The rookie achieved one escape, but Kacnowski’s two takedowns and 4:28 of riding time dropped Cox, 5-1, and narrowed UW’s lead to 14-9.
No. 14 Jordan snapped MSU’s 3-bout winning trend by defeating the Spartans’ Curran Jacobs, 8-6. Jordan logged three takedowns and two escapes and held Jacobs to just two points in each period to earn the victory. The redshirt sophomore’s efforts at 174 lbs. helped Wisconsin boast a 17-9 advantage over Michigan State heading into the last three matches.
No. 3 Rutt helped the Cardinal and White in earn its 20th point of the dual by battling to a 4-1 victory at 184 lbs. The junior defeated Michigan State’s Ian Hinton, 4-1, to extend his winning streak to 18 matches. Rutt has not dropped a competition since falling in the finals of the Cliff Keen Invitational Dec. 4, 2010.
At 197 lbs., Brandvold remains undefeated after earning his 11th victory of the season and the Badgers’ sixth win of the day. With 4:29 of riding time, the No. 2-ranked Badger defeated Michigan State’s Tyler Dickenson, 8-0, to give the Badgers a 15-point lead over the Spartans heading into the final bout.
No. 10 Bugenhagen sealed the Cardinal and White’s 11th win of the season by defeating Michigan State’s Joseph Rizqallah, 8-4. In the victory, Bugenhagen accumulated his eight points from three takedowns, one escape and 1:03 of riding time at heavyweight.
Wisconsin takes nearly two weeks off before traveling to Evanston, Ill. for the Big Ten Championships March 5-6. The Championships take place at the Welsh-Ryan Arena, home to Northwestern’s wrestling program.
