    Pins propel Purdue past SIU-Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Alex Griffin registered his first career fall, while Chad Welch and No. 16/17 Braden Atwood each recorded the fastest pins of their careers to propel No. 20 Purdue past SIU-Edwardsville, 30-15, Sunday in the Vadalabene Center. With the win, the Old Gold and Black improve to 2-1, 0-1 Big Ten.

“It was good to see the guys that were really prepared to go today,” assistant wrestling coach Pete Rogers said. “It was also good to see us get pins when we could. Quick pins are always impressive when you can take a Division I opponent down and pin him like our guys did.”

Griffin built a 5-1 lead through the first period on Karsten Van Velsor courtesy of a takedown and three-point nearfall. Starting the second period from down, Griffin rolled the Cougar and stuck his shoulders to the mat for the fall at 3:12. The pin was the first for the redshirt freshman, who is now 4-3, hailing from Lafayette, Ind.

At 165 pounds, Welch took Jake Vitale down 35 seconds into the opening period and got his first pin of the season 20 seconds later to move to 2-1. The 56 second fall is the fifth of the redshirt sophomore’s career and fastest he has recorded.

Twenty-one seconds after stepping on the mat, Atwood walked back off the mat after pinning Chris Johnson. It was the 197-pound Delphi, Ind., native’s second win by fall this season as he moved to 6-2. The fall also puts him in a five-way tie for 17th on the all-time career falls list with 17.

After a forfeit by SIU-Edwardsville at 133, Dannay Sabatello (7-2) blitzed Drew Vrbenec with five takedowns, pushing his team leading takedown total to 28, en route to a 13-7 decision for his seventh win at 141 pounds. Purdue also got a win from Doug Welch at 157, a 6-0 blanking of Logun Taylor. Welch got a first period takedown and added a reversal in the second. His final two points came via Taylor stalling in the third and from over five minutes of riding time.

The Boilermakers return to action at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 6-7. Purdue has wrestled in the event eight times over the past decade, recording five top-10 finishes. In its last appearance in 2010, the Boilermakers tied for eighth and had four placewinners.

“[The next two weeks] will be a good time for us to get prepared for Vegas, to make corrections and get in great shape,” Rogers said. “We’re excited. We will compete well individually out there. It will be nice to get everyone back in two weeks.”
