Saturday's dual started at 125 pounds where Malik Heinselman, ranked No. 14 this week by InterMat and No. 16 in FloWrestling, earned a 10-4 decision over 22nd-ranked Nicholas Aguilar. Heinselman scored two first-period takedowns and another as time expired in the second period. He added a riding time bonus point and improved his record to 3-0 on the season.
Rutgers took the next two matches, getting bonus point wins from top-10 ranted wrestlers at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Top-ranked Sammy Sasso swung the momentum back in Ohio State's favor when he won 11-5 over Michael Van Brill at 149 pounds. Sasso, now 3-0 on the year, scored on four takedowns and a reversal while also getting the riding time point.
Rutgers' Robert Kanniard gave the Scarlet Knights an 11-6 lead in the dual at intermission when he earned a 7-5 sudden victory decision over Elijah Cleary at 157 pounds. Ethan Smith, ranked No. 11 this week by FloWrestling and No. 20 in the InterMat poll, picked up two first-period takedowns in a 10-3 decision over Brett Donner.
Like Smith, No. 4/3 Kaleb Romero started fast in his match at 174 pounds, picking up three first-period takedowns to build a 6-2 lead. Romero earned bonus points with a reversal and two takedowns in the third period to finish off his 15-5 major decision. The bonus-point win gave the Buckeyes the overall lead for the first time in the dual.
Rutgers freshman John Poznanski gave the Scarlet Knights to team lead back when he sprung the first upset of the dual, topping No. 8/11 Rocky Jordan 9-6 on the strength on an escape and takedown in the final 50 seconds on the third period.
Redshirt sophomore Gavin Hoffman responded with an upset of his own in the next match, edging No. 14-ranked Billy Janzer at 197 pounds by a score of 3-2. Hoffman scored the only takedown of the match late in the second period and won it with an escape point to start the third period.
Tate Orndorff, making his Covelli Center debut after transferring to Ohio State from Utah Valley, clinched the dual with a 4-2 decision at heavyweight over Christian Colucci. Orndorff scored the decisive points in the third period following a stalling penalty on Colucci and a takedown with 44 seconds remaining.
Ohio State returns to action on Friday, Jan. 29 when its hosts Michigan State at the Covelli Center. The dual will be stream lived on BTN Plus.
