    Minnesota downs Northwestern

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Golden Gophers wrestling team took down Big Ten foe Northwestern 29-12 with two pins and seven overall bout victories for their second victory of the weekend.

    After forfeiting the first bout due to injury the Gophers started hot with two consecutive first period pins from 133-pound Ethan Lizak and 141-pound Mitch McKee.

    With his 22nd straight victory Steveson has passed head coach Brandon Eggum and volunteer assistant coach Zach Sanders who both had 21 straight victories in their career. Steveson is now tied with Jared Lawrence and Brock Lesnar at 23rd on the all-time list.

    Steveson defeated No.19 Conan Jennings by decision 9-4 with 4:28 in riding time.

    After defeating No.17 Illinois on Friday night the Gophers have won two consecutive duals and now have three Big Ten victories this season. The Gophers were victorious in 13 of the 20 bouts across the weekend.

    Lizak continued his strong weekend with a first period fall after winning on Friday night. Lizak got the first takedown, followed it up with a nearfall, and then finished off Valdiviez with the pin.

    McKee one-upped Lizak with another first period pin, this one in only 58 seconds. It was McKee's seventh pin of the season.
    184-pound Brandon Krone showed off his skill on top with a four-point nearfall after the getting the first takedown of the match. Krone added to his 6-0 first period lead with another takedown and four-count in the second period. The redshirt senior finished off the technical fall with his third turn of the bout.

    149-pound Tommy Thorn notched his second victory of the weekend with a 6-2 decision over Northwestern's Yahya Thomas. Thorn got three takedowns in the battle.

    174-pound Devin Skatzka got his 19th victory of the season due in large part to a four-point nearfall with under 50 seconds remaining in the final period. After taking the 5-2 lead Skatzka added a riding time point and won by decision 6-2.

    197-pound Dylan Anderson battled the Wildcats' Zack Chakonis for a 8-4 decision. Anderson led 6-3 heading into the final period and turned his defense into offense to score the final takedown of the bout to secure the victory.

    In a battle of top-10 wrestlers 157-pound Steve Bleise, ranked seventh, fell to No.3 Ryan Deakin by decision 9-4. Bleise got the first takedown of the bout but Deakin built up his lead in the final two periods.

    165-pound Carson Brolsma trailed for most of his match, including with one minute remaining in the third period, but two late takedowns tied the bout at seven. In sudden victory the Osseo, Minnesota, native suffered a takedown at the hands of Tyler Morland and dropped the decision.

    125-pound Sean Russell sat out the dual with an injury.
