Askren pins Klein, but Missouri falls to Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb. -- The No. 12 Missouri Tigers fell to the No. 5 Nebraska Cornhuskers, dropping their second dual of the Big 12 season, 21-18, at the NU Coliseum in Lincoln, Neb. The Tigers won five bouts, but bonus points for Nebraska made the difference in the match.

Finishing off the dual with the match's most exciting bout, No. 1 Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) faced off against the toughest opponent he's wrestled this year in No. 3 Jacob Klein. Scrambling across the mat in the first period, Askren scored 6 points in the first period. Keeping the pressure on in the second frame, Askren took Klein down three more times, then pinned his opponent 4:29 into the bout. The fall was Askren's 24th of the season and left his record unblemished at 33-0. It also gave Askren the 99th victory of his career, meaning that the junior will try to become the fastest Tiger to reach the 100-win club next week against No. 8 Oklahoma.

No. 17 sophomore Tyler McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) fought his way to a takedown with 51 seconds left in the opening period, establishing a 2-0 advantage over Patrick Aleksanyan. Choosing down to start the second frame, McCormick escaped Aleksanyan's hold twice to keep a 4-2 lead. Needing more points to seal the victory, McCormick picked up four more points with a takedown and two-point nearfall, winning the bout 8-3.

Filling in at 149 pounds for injured starter Josh Wagner, redshirt freshman Marcus Hoehn (Farmington, Mo.) opened a 2-1 lead over Ryan Davis in the opening three minutes. After Davis evened the bout with another escape in the second frame, Hoehn chose down to start the final two minutes. Breaking open a close match, Hoehn scored three points on an escape and a takedown to get the victory, 5-3.

Battling back and forth throughout the first period, redshirt freshman Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) opened a 3-2 lead over No. 16 Chris Oliver. Heading into the final frame with the score tied at 3-3, Chandler took the lead with an escape at 1:12, then was called for an illegal move to force overtime. Fighting to a draw through the opening minute of sudden victory, Chandler scored two points on a reversal in the first 30-second period, then scored again with a three-point nearfall to win the nine-minute match 9-4.

In a matchup between ranked wrestlers, No. 5 Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) and No. 14 Marc Harwood wrestled a tough bout, countering each other's moves throughout much of the match. A junior, Pell earned the 3-1 victory with a second-period reversal and 2:54 of riding time.

The Tigers take on No. 8 Oklahoma at home Sunday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. in the Hearnes Center next week. The final home meet of the season, fans will get a chance to recognize seniors Jeff Foust, Chris McCormick and Austin DeVoe on Senior Day.
