    Army West Point bullies Hofstra

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Army West Point wrestling team won its second Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association meet of the season and improved to .500 overall as the Black Knights downed Hofstra 33-10 at Hayes Gym in Arvin Gymnasium on Saturday.

"We keep getting better, and that's a positive thing," said head coach Kevin Ward. "I still think that at certain times we need to keep putting pressure on people. I think we could've scored some more points. It was a good performance, but I think we can do better."

The Black Knights came out with high intensity, taking the first 4 matches and jumping out to a 14-point lead. Starting at 165 pounds, Army alternated between decisions and major decisions for the first four matches. Andrew Mendel was able to come away with an 8-4 decision to get things started and draw even overall at 11-11 and in duals at 3-3.

He was followed by senior Brian Harvey, who dominated at 174 for the entire match. The New Palestine, Ind., native scored six early points in period one with a takedown and a four-point near fall and never looked back en route to his 15th win of the season. Harvey's 13-3 major decision extended the lead to 7-0 before Samson Imonode earned his first dual victory of the season with a 13-8 decision. Bryce Barnes continued the trend, working his way to an 18-8 major decision.

Hofstra utilized their size in the heavyweight match to get a key four points with a 9-1 major decision for Mike Hughes before a pin in the 125-pound match brought the score within four.

Looking to answer back, freshman Austin Harry ramped up the intensity in the 133-pound match with four four-point near falls in period 1 en route to a 16-0 technical fall. Harry's win improves his record in duals to 3-2 courtesy of his second-career technical fall.

Logan Everett provided the dagger for the Cadets with an unexpected pin over Jamel Hudson, who was ranked 16th by the OpenMat coming into the match. The pin was Everett's fourth of the season, coming at 3:27 to make the score 25-10.

"My game plan was to just stay solid and in good positions," said Everett on facing Hudson. "I didn't get to my offense as much as I wanted to, but I was able to wear him down and open some things up for me. It was really big for me to be able to get a win like this after last week."

Javier Rodriguez followed that up with a 9-7 decision before Russell Parsons Jr., who came into the match ranked 14th by InterMat, took a 16-0 technical fall to close out the meet and improving his team-leading win total to 19.

The Black Knights will return to action tomorrow against Penn at 5 p.m. from Hayes Gym in Arvin Gymnasium with the team's nine seniors being recognized before the meet.
