One of the biggest takeaways from the U20 World Championships, from an American standpoint, was the dominance of 97 kg gold medalist Michael Boyle. Boyle had three dominating wins to clinch a spot in the gold medal match and then proceeded to wear out the Russian Rodion Sanakoev, 12-2, to capture his world title. After re-evaluating and re-watching the tournament, it brought one question to my mind.
Is Michael Boyle the top prospect in the high school Class of 2027?
For the previous three years, since Willie Saylor started publishing his Big Board for the Class of 2027, the number one prospect in the class has been Melvin Miller. It’s been a quick, “next topic” type of debate whenever that topic arises. But, after Boyle’s performance, do we need to reconsider? Or at least revisit the discussion?
Miller holds the number one spot and deservedly so. He has a remarkable body of work throughout his high school career and shows no signs of slowing down. Should someone decide that Boyle’s prospect surpasses Miller’s, it doesn’t really diminish any of Miller’s accomplishments or future potential. That being said, when we start talking about high school seniors and their collegiate potential, their accolades as a freshman become less relevant than what they’ve done lately. I think it’s at least time to have the discussion.
The case for Miller
