Recent Recruiting Update (9/23/2026)

Recruiting news has picked up over the last week! Two Big Boarders announced commitments, including one flip, and one of the nation's top girls gave a verbal. In addition, there were a handful of programs that simply added to their recruiting classes with quality recruits. Here’s more information about the last week or so in recruiting: #124 Xavier Chavez (Sunnyside, AZ) - Iowa Iowa’s already-impressive recruiting class gets some punch with the addition of three-time Arizona state champion Xavier Chavez. Chavez was a 2025 NHSCA Sophomore National eighth-place finisher at the 145 lb weight class. Over the summer, Chavez went 6-0 in freestyle at the Junior Duals. He’s currently ranked 19th in the nation at 150 lbs and is slated to compete at that weight at the Super 32. Chavez is the latest name in this impressive Class of 2027 for Tom Brands’ team. #162 Gage Spurgeon (Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, IA) - Upper Iowa Initially, Gage Spurgeon had committed to North Dakota State, but he recently announced he’ll stay in-state to wrestle for Upper Iowa. Spurgeon is a two-time Iowa 2A state champion. His most recent title came in 2026 at 132 lbs. Back in 2024, Spurgeon earned All-American honors in Fargo by taking seventh place in 16U Greco. Upper Iowa has quickly put together a strong Class of 2027. Here is the current group of recruits. Spurgeon is one of two that have signed up to compete at the Super 32. Mason Bauer (Ashland, OH) - Ohio State Ohio State bolstered its recruiting class with the addition of Mason Bauer, an Ohio DI state third-place finisher in 2026. He was also third as a sophomore and fifth as a freshman. Bauer’s most recent placement came at 132 lbs. He is a two-time NHSCA grade-level All-American, taking fifth as a sophomore and making the finals as a freshman. Here is the Ohio State Class of 2027 after Bauer’s addition. Brendon Oehme (Brandon Valley, SD) - Air Force Three-time South Dakota state champion Brendon Oehme has committed to wrestle at the Air Force Academy. Oehme’s older brother, Trason, is already on the Falcons roster as a 141 lber. The younger Oehme brother projects to be at a lighter weight class since his most recent state title came at 120 lbs. This summer, Oehme took third in Junior Greco in Fargo at that same weight. He’s also a two-time NHSCA All-American (eight as a freshman and fourth as a junior). Air Force is amassing a huge Class of 2027 with Oehme being the latest piece. He, along with four other Air Force recruits, are slated to compete at the Super 32. Ibrahim Zaky (Woodgrove, VA) - VMI Beau Waldron (Hickman, MO) - VMI VMI is rolling with a pair of commitments within the last week. The first came from Beau Waldron, a two-time Missouri state finalist, with the most recent appearance coming at 190 lbs. Waldron has earned three state medals overall. Also committing to the Keydets was in-state product Ibrahim Zaky. Zaky was a Virginia 4A state champion in 2025 and third in his other two years of high school. He has finished fifth in Fargo 16U Greco and at the UWW U17 Greco trials. Zaky has also earned NHSCA All-American honors in each of his first three years of high school. At the Junior tournament, he defeated the opponent who had beaten him at the state tournament. Here is what VMI’s Class of 2027 looks like after these two additions. All three current recruits are registered to compete at the Super 32. Chance Wuhr (Lake Catholic, OH) - The Citadel The Citadel continues to gain momentum with a second recent verbal commitment. The latest comes from three-time Ohio DIII state placewinner Chance Wuhr. Wuhr has moved up a step on the state podium in each year of high school starting at sixth as a freshman, moving to fifth, and then taking fourth at 113 lbs as a junior. In 2025, Wuhr finished sixth at NHSCA Sophomore Nationals at 106 lbs. Here is The Citadel’s Class of 2027 with Wuhr’s addition. Wuhr will be in action at the Super 32. Eve Skrocki (Wahlert Catholic, IA/Valiant Prep, AZ) Iowa’s women’s team got on the recruiting scoreboard for 2027 in a big way with a commitment from Eve Skrocki. Skrocki was a 2026 U17 World Team member at 65 kg. She captured a 2025 Iowa state title, but has moved on to Arizona’s Valiant Prep - home to a pair of current Hawkeyes (Everest Leydecker, Karlee Brooks). Skrocki was a 2025 Fargo 16U national champion at 145 lbs and participated in the Who’s #1 dual later that year. Iowa just had a massive recruiting weekend so there may be more commitments on the way.
