Virginia Tech’s Class of 2026 got a boost on Sunday evening as they received a verbal commitment from the #26 overall wrestler in the senior class, Nick Garcia. Garcia is a three-time Illinois 3A state champion for Marmion Academy. He won his most recent title at 132 lbs. Garcia finished the season ranked fourth in the nation by Matscouts at 132 lbs.
Garcia had previously committed to stay in-state to wrestle for Illinois, but recently decided to flip. Illinois went through a coaching change midseason and prior to Garcia’s change of heart, the Illini had not seen anyone enter the transfer portal or flip commitments.
In addition to his in-state exploits, Garcia has earned All-American honors twice in Fargo with a fifth-place showing in Junior freestyle in 2024 and a runner-up finish in 2025. He also got on the podium twice at the Ironman, taking eighth in 2023 and third last season.
With Garcia’s addition, the Hokies now have commitments from three of the top 30 seniors in the country and four currently in the top 100. He’ll join #2 Bo Bassett (Bishop McCort, PA) and #29 Jonathan Rocha (Clovis North, CA) as the top 30 prospects.
Virginia Tech is coming off a season where both of its All-Americans were true freshmen, so there’s plenty of young talent already in Blacksburg. Garcia projects at 133 lbs, which is where one of those true freshmen competed (Aaron Seidel). Since both have redshirts available, the coaching staff should be able to make that work until someone is able to move up to 141.
