Within the last hour, Real Woods has posted on social media that he will not compete this week at Final X. Woods had a wrestle-off slated against Virginia Tech signee Bo Bassett for the 65 kg spot on the Senior men’s freestyle team.
Woods says that he’s dealing with “a severe antibiotic-resistant knee infection, and it requires medical intervention.” He also stated that he spent the last few days in the hospital dealing with this situation.
In his statement, Woods says he has submitted the proper documentation, presumably to USA Wrestling, to make the decision formal. Woods also wants to “give the fans, Team USA, and Bo the version of me you all deserve come time to finally compete for the spot,” so he is planning to wrestle-off later for the 65 kg spot.
Being a returning world medalist, Woods can request a delay in the wrestle-off, provided he meets the proper paperwork deadlines for the request.
We’ll have more information as this situation develops.
