No. 1 Blair Academy adds cache to Sooner State showdown at Geary Invitational

The nation's oldest wrestling tournament featured No. 1 Blair Academy (N.J.) along with almost every strong program in Oklahoma, three of whom were also nationally ranked. Even absent three nationally ranked wrestlers in No. 5 Michael Colaiocco (113), No. 6 Julian Ramirez (152), and No. 9 Andrew Merola (160), the Buccaneers still dominated the 73rd annual Geary Invitational Tournament at large.

Scoring 173 points, Blair Academy placed ten wrestlers inside the top three, including five weight class champions: Trevor Mastrogiovanni (113), Mike Madara (120), No. 18 Chris Cannon (126), Leo Tarantino (170), and No. 1 Chase Singletary (220). Placing second were No. 15 Nick Incontera (106), No. 5 Zach Sherman (132), No. 13 Malcolm Robinson (138), and Willy Kaiser (152); Sherman and Robinson lost in the finals to nationally ranked opposition. The wrestler to finish third was Nick Mosco (195). It should be noted there are matches for true second when the runner-up and third place finisher did not compete earlier in the tournament; however, the results of those matches were not available.

Ranked No. 12 nationally, Tuttle finished second in the tournament scoring 131.5 points on the strength of eight placers. The Tigers were led by a pair of weight class champions, No. 6 Tanner Litterell (138) and No. 17 Brik Filippo (145); Litterell beat No. 13 Malcolm Robinson 5-4 in the championship match. Other placers were Rhett Golowenski (120) in second; Luke Surber (113), Dustin Plott (152), and Tanner Johnson (170) in third; Maison Duke (182) in fifth; and Caleb Berryhill (160). Three other wrestlers were one match away from a top six placement finish.

No. 18 Sand Springs placed fourth in the tournament with 86 points on the strength of six placers. A pair of Sandite wrestlers won championships, No. 1 Daton Fix (132) and Peyton Scott (152); Fix beat No. 5 Zach Sherman by a 7-3 decision. Another three wrestlers placed third, Michael Ritchey (120), Beau Bratcher (145), and Devin Jordan (220); while Cody Mathis (138), who was in the lineup instead of state runner-up Jack Karstetter, placed sixth. Also missing from the lineup was state placer Zane Bosma (170), while three other Sandite wrestlers missed placement by one match.

No. 19 Choctaw placed sixth in the tournament with 70 points, anchored by weight class champion Jaryn Curry (160). Six additional wrestlers finished on the podium, including Colt Newton (113) and Zach Austin (285) finishing second; Andy Schlaepfer (120) placed fourth, Conner Holman (126) placed fifth; while Gabe Johnson (106) and Gary Dockery (195) placed sixth. Adversely impacting the Choctaw standing was mid-tournament injury defaults from state champion Zane Coleman (170) and state runner-up Easton Rendleman (182).

Another Sooner State power with an impressive performance was Broken Arrow, which finished third in the standings with 96 points. They were led by a pair of weight class champions in Gavin Potter (182) and Zach Marcheselli (195). Five other wrestlers placed, a single wrestler each in second through sixth: Caleb Wise (160), No. 16 Trenton Lieurance (285), Tajuan Daniels (132), Blake Gonzales (120), and Joe Hall (170). Two others finished one match short of placement.

Rounding out the weight class champions were T.J. Lang (Tulsa Union) at 106 pounds and Gage Johnson (Norman North) at 285. Lang beat a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers to win his title, 7-4 over No. 10 Wyatt Adams (Lawton McArthur) in the opening round and 5-4 over No. 15 Nick Incontera in the championship match; while Johnson beat No. 16 Trenton Lieurance 5-1 in overtime in the semifinal match.
