    Wyoming rolls past Cal Poly

The University of Wyoming wrestling team won nine of the 10 matches recording bonus points in five matches on their way to an impressive 35-2 win over Cal Poly on Saturday evening in the UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie. It was the Pokes' second-consecutive win and the second-straight dual UW has recorded 30 or more points. The Cowboys moved to 3-5 overall with the Mustangs dropping to 1-7.

"We don't take wins for granted and it was a good victory and a really dominating win," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "We showed a lot of guts in some matches tonight, but we also showed a lot of sloppiness, but when you are as aggressive as we were you will have that."

The Cowboys won the first four matches against the Mustangs. Junior Drew Templeman earned the first win of the night at 125 pounds with a 6-5 decision over David Gonzalez. He got the win with a riding time point after riding Gonzales for 1:05 of the match. The Pokes took a 9-0 dual lead after a pin in overtime by freshman Drake Foster over the Mustang's Jason DelaCruz at 133 pounds. Foster trailed 6-1 after one period, but rallied in the second and was awarded a stalling point to send the match in overtime where he secured his first career dual pin.

Sophomore Bryce Meredith responded with another win at 141 pounds this time a 9-2 decision over Colton Schilling. Meredith was up throughout the match and a reversal by Schilling late proved to be the only points allowed by Meredith, as he moves to 18-3 on the season and 7-1 in duals. Junior Cole Mendenhall was aggressive out of the gate earning a 12-2 major decision win over Joshy Cortez at 149 pounds. He scored three takedowns in the match and added a four-point nearfall in the opening frame to give the Pokes a 15-0 lead in the dual.

The Mustangs' only win came at 157 pounds with Colt Shorts downing sophomore Archie Colgan by decision, 5-2. Sophomore Kyle Pope (165 pounds) responded with a technical fall that lasted 2:26 in a 19-4 route of Joe Granger. He recorded five takedowns in the match and two four-point nearfalls to make the dual 20-3 in favor of the Pokes.

After Pope's win, senior Jace Jensen (174 pounds) added more bonus points with a 10-0 decision over Sohrab Movahedi. He recorded three takedowns in the match and one two-point nearfall. Junior Benjamin Stroh kept the Cal Poly's streak of scoreless wrestling going with a 16-0 technical fall over Mitch Woods. Stroh scored 10 points in the opening frame with a pair of four-point nearfalls.

"As a team I saw us moving forward and Cal Poly retreating and we did a good job of staying in their face," Branch said. "When we move forward and be aggressive good things will happen. It is something we can build on and wake up tomorrow and get better."

The Pokes closed out the dual with a pair of decision wins by Brandon Tribble (197 pounds) and Tanner Harms (285 pounds). Tribble downed J.T. Goodwin by a score of 5-4 after earning a takedown with 20 seconds left in the third period. Harms earned an 8-6 decision fueled by a reversal with 0:33 seconds left in the match to seal the 35-2 victory.

The Cowboys return to action next Friday visiting South Dakota State in Big 12 dual in Brookings, S.D. slated to start at 7 p.m.
