Wyoming closes regular season with win over Utah Valley

A pair of early pins by sophomores Bryce Meredith and Chaz Polson propelled the University of Wyoming wrestling team past Utah Valley 29-10 on Saturday evening in the UniWyo Sports Complex in Laramie. The Pokes closed out the regular season by winning five of their last six duals to finish the season 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the Big 12 Conference.

"I was pretty pleased finishing out the regular season with a dominating victory," UW head coach Mark Branch said. "I thought we wrestled really aggressive against a team that gave some teams fits this season. Overall we took care of business and I wanted to wrestle well for our seniors."

Utah Valley grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the dual when Jade Rauser defeated freshman Drake Foster by major decision, 12-2. The Pokes responded with four-straight wins. Meredith started the rally at 141 pounds with a pin of Jarod Maynes at the 3:51 mark of the match. It was his eighth pin of the season, as he finishes the dual schedule with 49 dual points. Junior Cole Mendenhall added a win with a 4-1 decision over Trevor Wilson at 149 pounds. Mendenhall scored all his points in the final frame of the match.

Junior Archie Colgan added another decision win at 157 pounds defeating Raider Lofthouse by a tally of 8-6. Colgan hung on for the win after leading the match 5-1 after two periods. He moves to 11-2 this season against members of the Big 12. Polson added his pinfall victory at the 2:32 mark of the match at 165 pounds over Brayden Humphreys that gave the Pokes a 18-4 lead at the break.

Utah Valley earned a win at 174 pounds out of the break when UW's Luke Paine fell by decision 4-1 against Ross Tyler. UW responded with three-straight wins. Junior Benjamin Stroh earned a major decision win at 184 pounds over Wil Sumber 11-3. He recorded two takedowns in the final minute to earn the major decision to make the dual 22-7 in favor of Wyoming.

Junior Brandon Tribble earned a 14-1 major decision win at 197 pounds over Aryton Almberg. He scored seven points in the final frame and used a pair of two-point nearfalls in the last thirty seconds to earn the win. He has back-to-back major decision wins for the Pokes. Senior Tanner Harms made the most of his Senior Day at heavyweight with a 6-3 decision against Dustin Denniston. A reversal in the second period lifted Harms to the win. He has now won six-straight matches. The dual closed out with Utah Valley's Tyler Scott earning a 12-5 decision over redshirt freshman Brock George at 125 pounds.

"We have a lot of time before the conference championship," Branch said. "We are sloppy at times and I didn't like somethings we did on bottom. We have time to recharge the batteries and get set for the postseason."

The Cowboys return to action on March 5-6 at the Big 12 Championship in Kansas City, Mo.
