With Wisconsin down by three points with three matches remaining, junior tri-captain Tyler Turner (Spring Valley, Wis.) keyed the Badgers comeback with his 11-9 decision over Michigan State's Darren McKnight to tie the team score.
At 157 lbs., sophomore Craig Henning extended his unbeaten streak to 10 with a major decision victory over Tony Greathouse, 12-2. The Chippewa Falls, Wis. native is now 7-0 in Big Ten action, 25-4 overall. His win pushed the Badgers into the lead 19-15.
Sophomore Jake Donar sealed the Badger win with a 6-1 decision over Bryan Harney at the closing weight of 165 lbs. The battle was close, but Donar notched take downs in the final two periods to earn the decision.
"The close matches were the key to our victory today," said assistant coach Cory Wallman. "This win was a great start to our weekend and hopefully we can carry this momentum into our match against Illinois on Sunday."
The Badgers were forced to rally after falling in the first two matches. At 174 lbs. senior Kelly Flaherty returned to the lineup for Wisconsin to face No. 5 R.J. Bourdo. Flaherty led 5-4 after the first period, but Bourdo's five takedowns in the second and third periods propelled him to a 16-11 victory. MSU's Joe Williams extended the Spartans lead with his 6-0 decision over Matt Maciag (Sussex, N.J.) at 184 lbs.
The Badgers responded at 197 lbs. with redshirt freshman Dallas Herbst (Winneconne, Wis.) defeating Jeff Clemens, 8-4. Also earning team points for UW was Lee Kraemer of DeForest, Wis. The Badger improved to 3-0 in the Big Ten at heavyweight with a 5-3 win over Max Lossen.
With the scored tied at six all, MSU answered with a pin at 125 lbs. from No. 3 Nick Simmons over Wisconsin's Collin Cudd (River Falls, Wis.) at 1:39. However, the Badgers were quick to answer as No. 6 Tom Clum (Arvada, Colo.) earned a pin over Jeff Wimberley at 2:08.
The Spartans were able to earn another victory at 141 lbs. as No. 5 Andy Simmons defeated Ed Gutnik (Iselin, N.J.) 7-5. Nevertheless, the Badgers came up big in the final three duals to win the meet and improve to 4-3 in conference action.
