VMI improved to 5-5 in dual meets with the victory. JMU fell to 6-24 overall for the season.
The Keydets opened with a decision at 125 pounds, as Jonathan Pope scored the 13-8 decision for his seventh win of the season, before JMU answered with a 5-4 comeback decision by Brandon Luce to knot the match at three.
JMU took a 7-3 lead at 141, as Jimmy Mitchum posted an 18-6 major decision against Brandon Franklin.
But that was the only lead the Dukes enjoyed all night. Sam Alvarenga tied the match at seven with a 12-3 major decision that got the ball rolling for the Keydets. Back-to-back decisions by Tommy Cunningham and John Burton at 157 and 165 put the Keydets on top 13-7.
The Dukes appeared poised to close the margin at 174 pounds with Ivan Lagares leading 13-6, but VMI's Dustin McCabe recorded the takedown and fall 4:10 into the match, advancing the Keydet lead to 19-7 with three matches remaining.
Corry Murray held serve by scoring an 18-7 major decision at 184, before the Dukes ended the streak of five straight Keydet wins at 197 pounds when Marcus Bartley defeated Kyle Elgert for a 7-4 decision.
VMI closed with a 17-3 major decision at heavyweight by senior Scott Buhman to clinch the 27-10 victory.
VMI returns to action on Sunday afternoon, taking on Chattanooga, the SoCon's top team, at 2 p.m. on the road.
