Utah Valley tops Cal Baptist in home opener

OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University wrestling team won six of the 10 bouts including four by bonus points en route to recording a 25-16 victory over California Baptist on Friday morning at Lockhart Arena.

The dual meet marked the first of a three duals on the day that the Wolverines are hosting between UVU, CBU and No. 25 Northern Colorado.

Opening up at 125 pounds, two-time NCAA qualifier and ninth-ranked Wolverine Taylor LaMont helped UVU get off to a strong start with an 11-2 major decision over Dilan Ajtun to give the Wolverines a 4-0 advantage. LaMont picked up four takedowns as well as over two-and-a-half minutes of riding time to record the bonus-point win. Redshirt freshman Ty Smith then added to UVU's lead with a quick first-period fall over CBU's Brandon Paulson (1:37) to extend Utah Valley's advantage to 10-0. After a takedown got Paulson square on his back, Smith then quickly secured the fall to record another bonus-point win for UVU.

CBU then responded with a fall from Chaz Hallmark at 141 pounds to make it a 10-6 team score, but back answered sophomore 149-pounder Cameron Hunsaker for UVU with a hard fought 3-2 decision to extend Utah Valley's lead to 13-6. Trailing CBU's AJ Raya 2-1 after the first period, Hunsaker then picked up an escape point in the second and followed by riding Raya out in the third to lock up riding time and record the victory.

UVU then picked up two more victories at 157 and 165 from freshmen Danny Snediker and Kekana Fouret to extend its advantage to 20-6. In his first match in Orem, the true freshman Snediker looked strong on his way to picking up a 12-4 major decision over CBU's Zach Rowe. The redshirt freshman Fouret then followed with a 3-0 decision with a second-period escape and a late takedown to record his first collegiate dual meet victory over Josh Grant.

After opening his 2020-21 season with a 3-0 outing and a title at the Cal Poly Round Robin event last weekend, fifth-ranked senior Demetrius Romero remained undefeated in his opening contest of the day with a 17-2 technical fall victory over CBU's Louis Rojas. Romero racked up a trio of takedowns, a pair of four-point nearfalls, a reversal, and riding time point on his way to picking up the tech fall win and extending UVU's lead to 25-6.

Following back-to-back wins from CBU's Caden Gerlach at 184 and Evan Bockman at 197, sophomore heavyweight Chase Trussell then found himself in a battle with CBU's Zach Schrader in the final bout of the match. With the score deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of regulation, overtime was needed to determine a victor. The senior Schrader then used his experience to lock up the winning takedown in the first sudden victory period to win by a score of 4-2 and make the final team score tally 25-16.

LaMont, Smith, Snediker and Romero all won their respective bouts by bonus points for the Wolverines in the contest. UVU improves to 1-0 on the year while CBU drops to 0-1.

The Wolverines will continue the day by hosting Big 12 Conference foe and the 25th-ranked Northern Colorado Bears at 2:30 p.m. MT. A neutral-site contest between CBU and UNC will also be held at 12:45 p.m. MT. Both duals will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network and FloWrestling.
