Utah Valley State begins season with intrasquad match

OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley State wrestling squad gave fans their first glimpse of this year's squad on Wednesday night when they battled in the intrasquad green & black match. While it was just teammate against teammate, some wrestlers were fighting for starting positions and it showed with some close battles.

"There were some good, close matches at 157 and 165," said head coach Cody Sanderson. "We'll still have to make some decisions. We have some places we need to get some work still. There's definitely room for improvement."

The 157 lb. match pitted Tanner Cowan and Devin Siddoway, with Cowan just getting by with a 6-to-5 win. At 165 lbs. Mark South scored four late points to top D.J. Meis 11-to-7.

The lone fall came at the heavyweight position, when freshman Dallin Norton showed fans why he was so highly touted out of Wasatch High School by pinning Cory Bastian with :10 seconds left in the first period. The fall clinched the match for the Black squad, giving them a 20-13 lead. Ivan Bigney, who wrestled twice for the Green team, won the final match to go to 2-0 on the evening, closing the gap to the final score of 20-17.

"He's tough, he's good," said Sanderson of Norton. "He's got tremendous skill but we do have to get him in better shape."

One of the highlights of the evening was senior Erkin Tadzhimetov's return to the mat after redshirting in 2004-05. Tadzhimetov, at 133, wrestled 125 lb. junior Talon Vickers and hung on to beat the lighter wrestler 7-to-3. For the native of Uzbekistan, it was just a chance to shake off the rust and some jitters.

"Before the match I was really pumped up...I was ready to go. I was so excited." said Tadzhimetov.

The Wolverines will begin the regular season next weekend in Iowa when they take on Iowa State on Friday, November 4th in Ames, Iowa. They will then compete in the Cyclone Open in Fort Dodge, Iowa on November 5th. Their first home match will be December 10th when Utah Valley State hosts Western State at 7:00pm in the Activity Center.
