Senior Mike Mui (Hingham, Mass.) started the night off on a positive note for Merchant Marine at 125 with a 7-2 decision over NYU's Wayne Yuan. Freshman Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) followed with a hard-fought bout against the #1 wrestler in the nation at 133, Nathan Pike, but lost via a 4-1 decision to bring the overall score of the match to an even 3-3.
The Violets earned another decision at 141 to take a 6-3 lead, but USMMA responded with back-to-back decisions at 149 and 157 by junior Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa) and freshman Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.), respectively, to go back ahead, 9-6. Twito won, 6-2, over NYU's Nick Matthews and Bunce earned an 8-7 win over Dylan Lojac.
NYU charged ahead in the match overall, taking a 15-9 lead with three-straight decisions at 165, 174 and 184. However, a 22-10 major decision by senior Ricky Fisher (Nashville, Tenn.) at 197 meant the match would come down to the final bout of the night. At heavyweight, freshman Brandon Joest (Kendallville, Ind.) won via 14-6 major decision to claim the 17-15 victory for the Mariners.
Up next, the Mariners will travel to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore this Saturday, Feb. 6, to make-up the two Centennial matches that were postponed last weekend due to Winter Storm Jonas. USMMA will take on Gettysburg in a neutral-site dual at 11 a.m. before ending the event against the host Blue Jays at approximately 1 p.m. A live video feed of the day will be available
