The Spartans improved to 2-4 overall this season in dual matches and 2-0 in the SoCon. The Mountaineers fell to 2-7 on the year and 0-1 in the league.
The match began at 133 pounds where Casey Boyle scored a 5-3 decision over Jacob Earp. Freshman Ivan Lopouchanski followed with his 25th win of the year as he pinned Chris Collura at the 2:53 mark of the first period.
Appalachian State’s Savva Kostis cut into the Spartan lead with a second period pin of Matt Barbo at 149 pounds. Travis Sheehy built UNCG’s lead to 12-6 with his 11-4 decision over Chip Powell.
Kyle Blevins pulled the Mountaineers within 12-10 after his major decision victory over Victor Hojilla at 165 pounds. That was as close as the home team would get the rest of the evening as Byron Sigmon answered with a major decision of his own at 174 pounds to put UNCG ahead, 16-10.
Appalachian’s Austin Trotman scored a 15-8 win over Andrew Saunders at 184 pounds, but the Spartans would go on to win the final three matches of the night. Ryan Sughrue started it off with a 5-1 decision against Dylan Temple at 197 pounds.
Peter Sturgeon followed at heavyweight by defeating Ken Altarac, 3-1, to clinch the victory for UNCG. True freshman Eric Chandler capped off the evening for the Spartans with a pin over Brett Boston just 31 seconds into the second period at 125 pounds.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday as they travel to Blacksburg, Va. for a pair of dual matches. UNCG will take on Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. before facing No. 15 Virginia Tech at 6 p.m.
