Three pins give Cornell a 31-15 win over Lock Haven

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell's 70-match win streak against unranked opponents looked to be in jeopardy for a moment, but the Big Red finished strong to top Lock Haven 31-15 on Sunday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center. Cornell improved to 7-2 on the season, while the Bald Eagles slipped to 5-7.

The Big Red led just 16-15 heading into the final three matches, but Cornell eased out by winning each to extend the streak further.

Taylor Simaz used relentless pressure and an unending motor to force a disqualification at 157, drawing five stall calls to pick up six big team points with the stallout in the third period. Sophomore Brandon Womack controlled his 165-pound match over Jared Siegrist in an 8-2 win, then Brian Realbuto put the capper on. He used two violent throws in the first minute to pick up back points, with the second resulting in a 51-second fall over Adam Mackie at 174.

His classmate Gabe Dean didn't need much more time than that, picking up a 96-second pin of Gavin Caprio after the blind draw started the dual at 184. Dean, the undisputed No. 1 wrestler at 184, improved to 22-0 on the year with 15 falls - including 12 in the first period.

Noah Baughman earned the third win by fall for the Big Red on the day with his pin early in the third that gave Cornell a lead back after Lock Haven won two straight after Dean's win to take a 9-6 edge. The score was tied 12-12 heading into the break, though Will Koll's 12-0 major decision victory over Lewis Williams immediately following the intermission put the home team ahead for good.

Cornell kicks off Ivy League competition with three consecutive road duals beginning with visits to Brown (1 p.m.) and Harvard (6:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Big Red has a decisive 53-2 edge in the all-time dual meet series with Brown and has won 19 consecutive matchups. Cornell leads the all-time series against Harvard 54-9 with 15 consecutive dual meet wins against the Crimson.
